Quick Start Powers Women’s Lacrosse to 21-2 Win Over Mount Holyoke

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT scored one minute into the game and never looked back as it went on to defeat Mount Holyoke College, 21-2, in NEWMAC women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Jack Barry Field. Lydia Birknes tallied two goals, one assist, four groundballs, and one caused turnover for the Engineers while Emi Bisson recorded two goals, four draw controls, one groundball, and one caused turnover for the Lyons.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 21, Mount Holyoke 2
  • Records: MIT (7-2 Overall, 4-0 NEWMAC); Mount Holyoke (5-3 Overall, 1-3 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Jillian Butler opened the game with back-to-back goals as MIT built an 11-0 advantage by the end of the first quarter. Ashley Thomas produced five goals, with three being assisted by Gwen Flusche, and earned an assist on the second of two goals by Annica Lam. Samantha Moorhead had an unassisted goal while Eloise Shin connected on a pass from Nina Petulla with 3:16 on the clock.
  • Lam kicked off the second quarter with three consecutive goals, moving the score to 14-0. Alexis Reinard was a factor in the Engineers' last two goals of the period as she set up Cecilia McCarthy at the 3:10 mark and then she buried a free-position goal with 16 seconds remaining before halftime.
  • MIT added four goals in the third quarter to go up 20-0. Birknes scored on a pass from Thomas and earned an assist on another McCarthy tally. Mairin Anderson recorded a player-advantage goal as Maeve McGinnis found the back of the net with 14 seconds to go.
  • Birknes notched the Engineers' final goal of the day just 1:44 into the fourth quarter. Bisson ended the shutout with eight minutes on the clock and added another goal for Mount Holyoke with 3:27 left to play.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Thomas generated five goals, three assists, and three groundballs while Lam posted five goals and two groundballs.
  • Flusche finished with four assists and two draw controls as Reinard totaled one goal, three assists, and two groundballs.
  • Laura Day and Butler collected six and four draw controls, respectively, while Petulla had two caused turnovers.
  • In net, Pauline Vien was not forced to make a save in the first quarter. Molly Dulde and Christina Fradella both stopped one shot as they split the rest of the game.
  • Molly McSharry and Jane Harmon both notched one groundball and one caused turnover for the Lyons.
  • Valeria Bolanos made six saves in 45 minutes of action while Theo Gillette recorded one save, one groundball, and one caused turnover.
