No. 9 Women’s Tennis Tops No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer, 5-2

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 9 MIT women's tennis team wrapped up its spring break trip with a 5-2 victory at No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer on Friday.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 9 MIT 5, No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer 2
  • Records: No. 9 MIT (8-2 Overall); No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer (5-6 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED - DOUBLES:
  • Katie Driscoll and Anastasia Samets built a 4-1 advantage before going on to defeat Meha Chaudhary and Ishya Bhavsar, 6-2, in the No. 3 position.
  • In the top spot, Alaina Kolli and Artemis Pados captured the doubles point with a 6-1 victory over Sofia Kalyva and Annique Varty.
  • At No. 2 doubles, Carley Chen and Chloe Zeng established 5-2 lead, but Tessa Ellingson and Aditi Gulati won back-to-back games. Chen and Zeng thwarted the comeback attempt by winning the next game.
HOW IT HAPPENED - SINGLES:
  • In a back-and-forth battle at No. 2 singles, Leticia Bazua claimed the last two games to win the set, 6-4, against Zeng. Bazua went on to register a 6-1 victory in the second set to tie the match at 1-1.
  • Sophia Yang won the first three games en route to a 6-3 decision versus Ellingson in the No. 5 spot. Yang then raced out to a 5-1 lead in the second set before producing another 6-3 victory.
  • In the No. 3 position, Driscoll created a 4-1 lead and fought off Chaudhary for a 6-4 victory. Trailing 4-3 in the second set, Driscoll came from behind to post a 6-4 win and give MIT a 3-1 lead.
  • Varty won the first three games of the opening set at No. 6 singles, but Samets narrowed the gap to two on three occasions, the last at 5-3 before Varty took 6-3 win. Both players traded games throughout the second set until three consecutive victories resulted in a 7-5 decision for Varty.
  • Tied at 2-2, Chen rattled off four straight wins to take the opening frame against Kalyva at No. 4 singles. In the second set, Kalyva won four of the last five games to notch a 6-3 victory. Holding a 3-2 lead in the third set, Chen claimed the next three games and clinched the match for the Engineers.
  • At the top spot, Deshpande gradually established a 5-2 advantage, but Mireille Chedid-Daley tied the first set at 5-5. Deshpande responded by winning back-to-back games to capture a 7-5 victory. In the second set, Deshpande turned a 2-2 deadlock into a 6-2 victory.

  • MIT will resume NEWMAC play on Friday, April 3 when it visits No. 30 Wellesley College for a 4:00 PM match.
