Women’s Lacrosse Falls to No. 2 Wesleyan, 17-10

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – After a tight start, No. 2 Wesleyan University pulled away for a 17-10 win over MIT in a non-conference women's lacrosse game on Sunday afternoon. Ashley Thomas tallied two goals, four assists, one groundball, one draw control, and one caused turnover for the Engineers.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 2 Wesleyan 17, MIT 10
  • Records: MIT (7-3 Overall); No. 2 Wesleyan (8-0 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In a back-and-forth first quarter that saw four ties and two lead changes, Annica Lam's second goal of the game gave MIT a 4-3 edge with 5:17 on the clock. However, Wesleyan responded with three unanswered goals to reclaim the lead.
  • Eloise Shin brought the Engineers within 6-5 courtesy of a feed from Thomas after 50 seconds elapsed in the second quarter, but the Cardinals answered back less than two minutes later. A defensive battle ensued until Thomas broke through with 2:17 remaining, cutting MIT's deficit in half. Wesleyan countered with a goal with 55 seconds left to enter halftime with an 8-6 lead.
  • The Cardinals created some breathing room 3:35 into the third quarter, but the score remained unchanged until the 5:54 mark when Wesleyan netted the first of three goals that increased its advantage to 12-6. Shin, however, ended the Engineers' scoring drought courtesy of a free-position goal with 52 seconds on the clock.
  • The Cardinals controlled the action for the majority of the fourth quarter as five consecutive goals moved the score to 17-7 with 7:20 left to play. Despite the deficit MIT continued to attack as it closed out the game with three goals during the final 2:46. Thomas buried a solo effort and then she earned assists on blasts from Samantha Moorhead and Lam.
