Baseball Shuts Out Emerson, 5-0

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass.  —   First year starting pitcher Thomas Grisamore struck out seven and only surrendered one hit over 7.2 innings while Joey Severson finished the game with two doubles and a pair of RBIs to lead the MIT baseball team to a 5-0 NEWMAC victory over Emerson College on Tuesday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: MIT 5, Emerson 0
  • Records: MIT (6-10 Overall, 3-0 NEWMAC); Emerson (2-13 Overall; 0-4 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Grisamore and Emerson starter Henry Kagan dueled through the early innings as the game moved into the fifth scoreless.
  • MIT scored the game's first run in the top of the fifth inning. Maximo Del Pino opened the inning with a single to right field before moving to second on a groundout from James Dempsey. Eitan Moore lifted a fly out to right for the second out of the inning but advanced Del Pino to third in the process. Dalton Chi then delivered with an RBI single to left toput the Engineers ahead, 1-0.
  • The Engineers added some insurance in the seven thanks to John Dwyer. Dwyer opened the inning with a double to right and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He then scored when Del Pino grounded out to short to put MIT up 2-0.
  • Del Pino's RBI ground out ended the day for Kagan after 6.1 innings and a pair of earned runs. Kagan also struck out five Engineers while working around six hits and a walk. Emerson reliever Samuel Ravela got a pair of strikeouts to end the MIT seventh, but MIT got to Ravela in the eighth to add to its lead.
  • Chi reached on an error to open the eighth inning before moving to third on a ground out from Jack Finnegan and a wild pitch. Following a walk to Zev Moore, Severson doubled down the leftfield line to bring both runners around to score and push the Engineers ahead, 4-0.
  • Grisamore went back out in the bottom of the eighth and got Liam Wagner to strike out looking and Jack McCoy to ground out to third before handing the ball to Jonathan Freedman to end his day. Freedman struck out Vincent Fuller to end the inning and send the game to the ninth.
  • MIT added one more run in the final frame, with Dempsey scoring on a wild pitch after he reached base on a hit-by-pitch with one out.
  • With MIT leading 5-0, Deven Pietrzak picked up back-to-back strikeouts to open the bottom of the ninth but John Churchward reached with a single with two outs. Pietrzak got the next batter to fly out to end the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
