Union Edges Out Women’s Lacrosse, 13-11

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Two goals inside the final 4:29 of regulation created enough of a cushion for Union College as it registered a 13-11 win over the MIT women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon. Ashley Thomas was a factor in seven of the Engineers' goals as she registered four goals and three assists.
 
THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Thomas earned assists on goals by Gwen Flusche and Nina Petulla during the first five minutes of the game and then Jillian Butler increased MIT's lead to 3-0 with 2:16 on the clock. Union, however, ended the shutout 30 seconds later with a player advantage goal.
  • Player advantage free-position goals from Thomas and Butler sandwiched a goal from the Garnet Chargers, making the score 5-2 at the 7:27 mark of the second quarter. Two minutes later, Union produced the first of four unanswered goals which gave it a 6-5 edge with 20 seconds remaining before halftime. Thomas replied with a free position goal right before time expired.
  • The Garnet Chargers recorded a player advantage goal early in the third quarter, but Alexis Reinard redirected a feed from Thomas to tie the game at 7-7 with 9:49 on the clock. Union followed with another four-goal burst while Thomas ended MIT's scoring drought courtesy of a pass from Petulla with 1:36 left.
  • The Engineers carried the momentum into the fourth quarter as they knotted the score at 11 at the 9:08 mark. Annica Lam opened the scoring and then set up Eloise Shin for a player advantage goal as Thomas buried the equalizer. A defensive battle ensued until the Garnet Chargers broke through with 4:29 to go, and then they added an insurance goal 1:15 later.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Flusche posted eight draw controls, five groundballs, and a goal while Butler totaled two goals, three groundballs, and three draw controls.
  • Emilie Dubiel produced three groundballs and two caused turnovers as Pauline Vien recorded seven saves, one caused turnover, and one groundball.
