Baseball Can’t Hold Early Lead, Falls to UMass Boston in High-Scoring Contest, 22-16

BOSTON, Mass. — The MIT baseball team took an 8-0 run in the top of the first inning, only to see UMass Boston come storming all the way back to down the Engineers, 22-16, in a high scoring non-conference contest on Monday afternoon at Monan Park.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: UMass Boston 22, MIT 16
  • Records: UMass Boston 2-2 overall, MIT 0-6 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Dalton Chi's spectacular start to the season continued in the top of the first inning as he opened the game with an opposite field home run, the first of his career, that snuck over the right field wall. He later added a single and a stolen base after MIT batted around in a big first inning that saw the Engineers take an 8-0 advantage.
  • The only out the first time through the MIT order was a sacrifice fly from Maximo Del Pino that made the score 6-0. MIT also got an RBI double from Owen Malone, and a two-run home run crushed off the bat of John Dwyer over the left field fence.
  • UMass Boston got three runs back in the bottom of the first inning, countering with a lead-off home run of its own from Nick Farnacci before Jayden Lafleur tripled and Cole Bissaillon singled to drive in runs that made the score 8-3.
  • MIT added a run back to its advantage in the top of the second, as Del Pino singled to left to score James Dempsey to make the score 9-3. However, UMass Boston put up six runs in both the second and the third innings to erase the MIT lead and take control of the contest.
  • Breon Parker, Elliot Miles, Jayden Lafleur and Ben Sherry all drove in runs as part of the six-run second, as a two-RBI single from Sherry tied the contest at 9-9. UMass Boston rallied all the way back in the third, scoring the go-ahead run on a passed ball before adding five more runs as both Sherry and Farncacci notched RBI doubles in the inning to give the Beacons a 15-9 lead after three.
  • A Jack Finnegan RBI double pulled a run back for MIT in the top of the fourth, but UMass Boston continued to grow its advantage over the next two innings, eventually taking a 19-10 lead after the fifth. Sherry added another RBI single in the fourth while Farnacci stole home in the fifth before Brandon Gaer delivered the big blast with a two-run homer that pushed the Beacons' advantage to nine.
  • The Engineers moved back within five runs in the seven inning, scoring four runs on two hits, including a Joey Severson two-RBI single and a two-RBI double from Del Pino. The 19-14 deficit was as close as MIT would get for the remainder of the contest as the Beacons added another run in the bottom of the seventh and two runs in the bottom of the eighth, including a solo home run from Ryan Slack.
  • Finnegan registered a bases-loaded RBI single in the ninth, but UMass Boston would escpae the threat to take the final, 22-16.
