Baseball Splits at Babson; Late Heroics Secure Game One Win

BABSON PARK, Mass. — The MIT baseball team split a NEWMAC doubleheader with Babson College on Saturday at Govoni Field. John Dwyer's three-run home run sparked a four-run ninth inning rally that helped the Engineers take game one, 12-11, before Babson countered with a 14-1 win in seven innings in game two.

THE BASICS:

  • Game One: MIT 12, Babson 11
  • Game Two: Babson 14, MIT 1 (7 inn.)
  • Records: MIT (10-13 Overall, 7-2 NEWMAC); Babson (12-11 Overall, 4-3 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED - Game One:

  • Babson took a 3-0 lead with a three-run first inning in the opener, scoring on a sacrifice fly, an MIT errorand an RBI single from Ryan Liss that also ended the inning when he was thrown out at second by Zev Moore trying to stretch the single into a double.
  • MIT made the score 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning, as Dwyer, James Dempsey and Owen Malone put together three straight singles to drive in a run. An RBI ground out from Maximo Del Pino scored Dempsey.
  • Babson added three more runs on a Ryan Grace home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to move ahead by four, 6-2. The teams then exchanged a pair of runs in the sixth inning.
  • Eitan Moore drove in two runs in the top of the sixth with a two-RBI single to center to cut the deficit to 6-4. An RBI single from Ben Valente and another MIT error plated two for Babson in the home half to make the score 8-4.
  • MIT rallied all the way back in the eighth inning, tying the game at 8-8 as Eitan Moore drove in three more runs with his second home run of the season, a three-run shot to centerfield. Del Pino also plated a run with an RBI ground out in the inning.
  • With the contest tied for the first time since the first inning, Babson scored three runs to retake the lead, 11-8. An RBI single from Valente drove in one, before a Gabe Cushner sacrifice fly and a Robert Christensen RBI single made the score 11-8.
  • With Babson three outs away from winning the game, MIT responded instead with three straight base runners. Zev Moore singled through the infield to lead off the top of the ninth. John Spivey followed with a walk before Dwyer stepped in and took a 2-2 pitch out to right field to tie the game, 11-11.
  • MIT would go on to take the lead thanks to Dempsey's adventure around the bases. Dempsey reached with a single following Dwyer's home run. He then advanced to second and third on a failed pickoff attempt before scoring on a wild pitch.
  • Owen Malone came on to earn the save for MIT, getting Babson to go 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth as MIT earned the 12-11 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED - Game Two:

  • It was all Babson in game two as the Beavers scored 14 runs on ten hits to earn a 14-1 victory.
  • Babson starter Chase Burrows went the distance on the mound, limiting MIT to three hits while striking out six over 7.0 innings to earn his fourth win of the season.
  • Babson scored two in the first before Dwyer hits his second home run of the day in the top of the second inning, a solo shot that made the score 2-1.
  • The Beavers took control of the contest in the bottom of the second, scoring six runs on five hits, including a two-RBI single from Valente, to take an 8-1 advantage.
  • Babson carried the 8-1 lead into the fifth before scoring four more runs to move ahead 12-1. Two more Babson runs in the bottom of the sixth gave the contest its 14-1 scoreline.
