Baseball Tops Clark in Rain-Shortened Contest, 9-1

WALTHAM, Mass. — Eitan Moore finished a triple shy of the cycle as the MIT baseball team earned a 9-1 NEWMAC victory over Clark University on Tuesday evening at Stein Diamond on the campus of Brandeis University. Tuesday's game was called in the top of the eighth inning due to heavy rain. 

THE BASICS:

  • Score: MIT 9, Clark 1 (8 inn.) 
  • Records: MIT (11-13 Overall, 8-2 NEWMAC); Clark (16-11 Overall; 3-5 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • MIT pitchers Thomas GrisamoreOwen Malone, and Chase Rubin held Clark without an earned run in the contest, as the only run for the Cougars scored in the top of the first inning when Cole Camara singled to score Bennett Hewett after Hewett had moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt and a passed ball.  
  • MIT went 1-2-3 against Clark starter Jacob Kline in the bottom of the first but broke through with four runs on two hits in the bottom of the second inning, including a two-run home run down the left-field line by Eitan Moore. The Engineers left two runners on base to end the inning but still took a 4-1 lead into the third.  
  • MIT added a run in the fourth inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jack Finnegan after three straight Engineers reached to open the inning.  
  • The MIT lead extended to 7-1 in the sixth inning as Eitan Moore drove in another run, this time with an RBI double to left center, before scoring on a wild pitch later in the inning. 
  • The Engineers added two more runs to move ahead 9-1 in the bottom of the seventh thanks to RBI singles from both Maximo Del Pino and Owen Malone
  • The MIT pitching staff did the rest, Grisamore went 4.0 innings, working around three hits and striking out five. Malone followed with a strong two shutout innings before giving way to Rubin. Rubin struck out two in 1.1 innings. 
  • The game ended after Brayden Hollinrake doubled to right center in the top of the eighth.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Eitan Moore has now homered in two of his last three games and has eight of his 17 hits on the season over the past three games. 
  • Malone pitched two shutout innings and finished 2-for-2 at the plate with two walks, three runs scored, and two RBIs.  
  • Del Pino drove in a run and leads the team with 19 RBIs on the season. Malone is one back with 17 RBIs. 

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT will play Suffolk in a non-conference game on Thursday at 7:00 PM at LeLacheur Park in Lowell, Mass.
