Women’s Lacrosse Defeats Babson, 19-8, on Senior Day; Versprille Records 100th Career Win

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A pair of five-goal runs helped the MIT women's lacrosse team defeat Babson College, 19-8, on Saturday afternoon at Jack Barry Field. Ashley Thomas powered the Engineers with four goals and three assists as Anne Versprille became the first head coach in program history to record 100 wins. Lilly Bedard led the Beavers with three goals and an assist.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 19, Babson 8
  • Records: MIT (11-3 Overall, 7-0 NEWMAC); Babson (7-5 Overall, 4-3 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Jillian Butler opened the scoring after 1:16 expired courtesy of a free position goal and then she earned an assist on a blast by Thomas almost two minutes later. Annica Lam then gave MIT a 3-0 lead with a player-down goal at the 9:33 mark. Just over a minute later, Jenna Wong put Babson on the scoreboard and then Bedard quickly followed with a free position goal of her own. Thomas gave the Engineers some breathing room when she found the back of the net with 6:13 on the clock, making the score 4-2.
  • Margaux Boneu redirected a feed from Bedard, cutting the Beavers' deficit in half almost two minutes into the second quarter. The score remained unchanged until Alexis Reinard connected on a pass from Samantha Moorhead midway through the frame, sparking a 5-0 run that resulted in a 9-3 halftime advantage.
  • Both teams traded goals in the third quarter, moving the score to 11-5. A goal from Thomas at the 12:38 mark was matched by one from Grace Rooney that was set up by Wong a minute later. Lam increased the lead with 3:10 to go, but Bedard replied with a goal of her own two minutes later.
  • Player advantage goals from Thomas and Lam early in the fourth quarter created a 13-5 cushion. However, Boneau recorded a player-advantage free position goal which was followed by an unassisted blast by Wong. Lam buried a free position shot, but Bedard brought Babson within six (14-8) with her solo effort at the 7:04 mark. This was as close as it would get as MIT generated another five-goal run down the stretch.
