Southern Maine Pulls Away to Defeat Baseball, 10-2

GORHAM, Maine — MIT rookie Dalton Chi homered and scored a pair of runs but the University of Southern Maine scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning and four runs in the seventh inning to pull away for a 10-2 non-conference victory over the MIT baseball team on Saturday at Ed Flaherty Field. 

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Southern Maine 10, MIT 2 
  • Records: MIT (11-14 Overall); Southern Maine (21-6 Overall) 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After Southern Maine starter Gabe Clifford got MIT 1-2-3 in the top of the first inning, the Huskies posted three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Caleb Vacchiano drove in a pair of runs with a double as the hosts took advantage of three hits and an MIT error. 
  • Chi's third home run of the season got the Engineers on the board in the top of the fourth inning to make the score 3-1. Southern Maine immediately countered in the home half, plating a run on a Kaiden Morin RBI single.  
  • The Huskies carried the 4-1 lead into the sixth inning before MIT cut the deficit to 4-2 on a Zev Moore RBI double that scored Chi following a leadoff walk. 
  • Southern Maine went on to score two runs in the bottom of the sixth to move ahead 6-2. Morin drove in another run with an RBI single in the inning. 
  • The Huskies put the game out of reach in the seventh inning, scoring four runs on five hits and a wild pitch to move ahead 10-2.  
  • Clifford's day ended after seven innings, as he struck out 10 Engineers while giving up just four hits and two earned runs. He improved to 2-2 on the season with the win. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Cole Foster took the loss for MIT, giving up three earned runs and three hits in one inning of action.  
  • Chase Rubin pitched four innings in relief for MIT, giving up just one earned run and striking out five in his tenth appearance of the season.  
  • John Dwyer finished 1-for-3 with a walk and has now hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games. He leads MIT with a .393 batting average. 
  • Zev Moore had a team-high two hits for MIT. 

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT returns to NEWMAC play on Tuesday when the Engineers will host No. 2 Salve Regina at 7:00 PM at LeLacheur Park in Lowell, Mass.
