No. 3 Salve Regina Rallies Early to Sink Baseball, 12-4

NEWPORT, R.I. – The MIT baseball team took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but No. 3 Salve Regina countered quickly, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the second on the way to a 12-4 NEWMAC victory on Tuesday afternoon at Reynolds Field.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Salve Regina 12, MIT 4
  • Records: Salve Regina (27-3 overall, 9-2 NEWMAC); MIT (11-15 overall, 8-3 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Joey Severson and John Dwyer reached base to open the second inning before MIT took advantage of a Salve miscue to move ahead 2-0 when an errant throw rewarded MIT's aggressive base running and allowed a pair of runs to score on a wild pitch and throwing error.
  • Salve quickly countered in the bottom of the inning, scoring eight runs on six hits and a pair of MIT errors to seize control of the game, 8-2. Elliot Hamilton drove in a pair of runs with a single that also saw another run score on an MIT throwing error.
  • Dalton Chi got one run back in the top of third, hitting his fourth home run of the season to left-center to make the score 8-3.
  • MIT held Salve scoreless in the bottom of the third inning, but the Seahawks added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to move ahead 10-3.
  • The final MIT run came in the sixth inning, as John Spivey and Zev Moore opened the frame with back-to-back singles before Spivey scored on a two-out single from James Dempsey. The MIT rally ended when Maximo Del Pino fouled out on the first base side of the infield.
  • Leading 10-4, Salve added two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, courtesy of an RBI single from Grady Schopps, to move ahead 12-4.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Chi has homered in back-to-back games for the first time in his career.
