Baseball Falls at No. 24 Endicott College, 10-2

BEVERLY, Mass. – John Spivey hit a two-run home run in the top of the second inning but No. 24 Endicott College responded with ten unanswered runs to defeat the MIT baseball team, 10-2, in non-conference play on Thursday afternoon at North Field.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Endicott 10, MIT 2
  • Records: Endicott (24-7 overall); MIT (11-16 overall)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • MIT took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Spivey homered on the first pitch he saw from Endicott starter Evan Scully. Spivey lifted the pitch down the left-field line with Joey Severson on base after being hit by a pitch.
  • Spivey's long fly was the only blemish on the day for Scully, as he went 5.0 innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out five to earn his first win of the season.
  • Scully also got the benefit of strong run support from the Gulls. Endicott scored four runs on three hits and an MIT error in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 lead. Cade Bernardo had a two-RBI double as part of the rally.
  • The Gulls added three runs on three hits in the fourth to move ahead 7-2. Endicott would go on to score a run in the seventh and two runs in the eighth to take the 10-2 victory.
  • Bernardo finished the game with three hits, three RBIs and a pair of runs scored to lead Endicott. The Gulls only totaled eight hits against seven different MIT pitchers.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Spivey's second inning home run was one of only three hits in the contest for MIT.
  • John Dwyer singled in the fourth and reached base on a walk. Dwyer leads MIT with a .381 average and a 1.070 OPS on the season. Both would be career-highs for the junior.
  • Making his ninth appearance of the season, Dylan Karmin was charged with the loss for MIT, giving up three earned runs in 0.1 innings of work.

UP NEXT:

  • MIT will host Wheaton for a NEWMAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 25 at the Harrington Athletic Village in Brighton, MA. First pitch for game one is 12:00 PM.
