BRIGHTON, Mass. — The MIT baseball team dropped the opening game of a doubleheader with Wheaton College in ten innings, 7-6, before rallying to take a 10-8 victory in game two in a crucial NEWMAC matchup on Saturday at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond.
THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED - Game One:
- MIT fell behind early before rallying to force extra innings in a back-and-forth opener.
- Wheaton scored three runs in the top of the second inning to take a 3-0 lead against MIT starter Matthew Spenner. An RBI single from Maximo Del Pino cut the lead to two in the bottom of the inning, 3-1.
- The Lyons took back their three-run lead in the top of the third only to see the Engineers counter with a Zev Moore RBI triple in the bottom of the third to make the score 4-2.
- Wheaton continued to lead 4-2 until the sixth inning when the Engineers put together three straight singles, including an RBI base knock from Owen Malone, to cut the deficit to one, 4-3.
- Brayden Lewis drove in the fifth Wheaton run in the top of the seventh to give the Lyons a 5-3 lead but MIT finally rallied all the way back in the bottom of the seventh. Jack Finnegan walked with one-out to start the rally. He moved to third on a Zev Moore double before scoring on a sacrifice fly from John Dwyer. MIT then tied the game when John Spivey singled up the middle to score Zev Moore.
- The game advanced to extra innings with the score tied 5-5, but Lewis struck again for Wheaton, hitting a leadoff home run to give the lead back to the Lyons. Wheaton added another run on a fielder's choice RBI to carry a 7-5 lead into the bottom half of the inning.
- MIT got one run back in the bottom of the inning, as Dwyer doubled to lead off the inning before James Dempsey recorded his fourth hit of the contest to bring him home, but the game ended with one runner on base.
HOW IT HAPPENED - Game Two:
- Wheaton scored the first two runs of the game but it was all MIT in the early innings of game two, as the Engineers raced to a 6-2 lead after three innings of play.
- Zev Moore drove in a run in the first before hitting a towering home run to left in the second inning. Dempsey also drove in a pair in the first, while Finnegan and Joey Severson tallied RBIs in the second and third innings, respectively.
- Wheaton trimmed the deficit to three in the fifth inning, but MIT would go on to lead 10-3 by the end of the sixth inning. MIT scored on a Wheaton error in the sixth before Zev Moore, Dempsey, and Severson each drove in runs later in the inning.
- Faced with its largest deficit of the day, Wheaton scored two runs in the seventh and three runs in the eighth, as a Collin Reilly two-RBI single to center in the eighth capped the rally with Wheaton now trailing 10-8.
- Malone shifted from third to the mound in the eighth and put an end to the Wheaton rally, getting the final out of the eighth with two runners left stranded before recording a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his third save of the season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Dempsey finished the day with seven hits for MIT. He was 4-for-5 in game one and 3-for-4 with three RBIs in game two.
- Zev Moore finished the day 8-for-10 at the dish. He was 3-for-5 with a double and a triple in game one and 4-for-5 with a home run in game two.
- Spivey was 3-for-5 with a triple in game two.
- Spenner pitched 7.0 solid innings, giving up five runs, three earned and striking out five in game one.
- Starting pitcher Cole Foster pitched 4.0 innings in a no-decision in game two.
- Thomas Grisamore earned the win, pitching 3.2 innings in relief and working around 10 hits while only giving up three earned runs.
