Baseball Can't Keep Pace With No. 4 Salve Regina, Falls 16-6 (8 inn.)

WALTHAM, Mass. — No. 4 Salve Regina opened up a 7-1 lead after three innings as the Seahawks cruised to a 16-6 victory in eight innings over the MIT baseball team in a matchup of the top two teams in the NEWMAC standings on Tuesday evening at Stein Diamond on the campus of Brandeis University.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Salve Regina 16, MIT 6 (8 inn.)
  • Records: MIT (12-18 overall, 9-5 NEWMAC); Salve Regina (30-4 overall, 12-2 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Salve scored three runs on two hits and an MIT error in the top of the first inning, taking a 3-0 lead on the strength of an RBI single from Shane Williams and Dylan Cimini.
  • MIT got one run back in the bottom of the inning. James Dempsey lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score Dalton Chi after Chi reached base earlier in the inning on a dropped third strike.
  • An Elliot Hamilton solo shot got the run back in the top of the second before Salve added three more runs in the top of the third to take a six-run advantage, 7-1.
  • Cimini drove in another run with an RBI single in the top of the fourth to give Salve an 8-1 lead in the fourth. MIT got the run back in the fourth on an RBI double from Owen Malone but continued to trail by six runs, 8-2.
  • A Danny Rogers RBI triple in the fifth gave Salve a 9-2 lead before MIT went to work in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four runs on three hits and a costly error at third base that allowed a run to score and MIT to pull within three runs, 9-6.
  • MIT reliever Deven Pietrzak recorded a 1-2-3- inning in the top of the sixth inning but that was the only scoreless frame the Seahawks would post on the evening.
  • With MIT within three, Salve put up four runs in the seventh and three more runs in the eighth to pull away, 16-6.
  • MIT got a runner aboard in the bottom of the eighth inning when Maximo Del Pino singled with one out but the Engineers could not find a way to get Del Pino around to score as the game ended, 16-6, after eight innings.
