No. 6 Women’s Tennis Defeats No. 35 Wellesley, 6-1

WELLESLEY, Mass. – In a battle of unbeaten NEWMAC women's tennis teams, No. 6 MIT emerged with a 6-1 victory over No. 35 Wellesley College on Friday afternoon.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 6 MIT 6, No. 35 Wellesley 1
  • Records: No. 6 MIT (9-2 Overall, 3-0 NEWMAC); No. 35 Wellesley (6-4 Overall, 2-1 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED - DOUBLES:
  • In the No. 3 position, Katie Driscoll and Anastasia Samets jumped out to a 3-0 lead; however, Nandini Patel and Rianna Mariotti tied the match. Driscoll and Samets responded with three consecutive victories to take the 6-3 win.
  • Alaina Kolli and Artemis Pados captured the doubles point with a 6-1 win over Suzanne Xu and Emilee Pak in the No. 1 spot.
  • Trailing 2-1 to Luna Bian and Kriti Sarav, Carley Chen and Chloe Zeng won five games in a row to complete the doubles sweep.
HOW IT HAPPENED - SINGLES:
  • Trailing 3-2, Zeng came from behind to post a 6-3 win against Patel in the first set at No. 2 singles. After trading games to start the second set, Zeng pulled away for a 6-2 victory.
  • At the top spot, Saina Deshpande jumped out to 5-1 lead before taking the first set, 6-2, against Sofia Corte-Real. Deshpande went on to record a 6-0 score for the second set, giving MIT a 3-0 lead for the match.
  • In the No. 4 slot, Chen lost to Sophie Buttorff, 6-2, in the first set. In the second stanza, Chen tied the set at 3-3; however, Buttorff responded with three consecutive victories to secure a point for Wellesley.
  • After a back-and-forth start, Sophia Yang rattled off four straight wins to take the opening set, 6-2, against Sarav in the No. 5 position. Yang then won the second set, 6-1, which resulted in her clinching the match for the Engineers.
  • Rayna Li won four games in a row to claim the first set, 6-3, against Pak in the No. 6 spot. Li carried the momentum into the second set as she raced out to a 5-0 advantage en route to a 6-2 victory.
  • In the No. 3 position, Driscoll gradually established 5-2 lead, but Bian won back-to-back games. Driscoll replied by winning the next game to thwart the comeback attempt. Facing a 5-3 deficit in the second set, Driscoll tied the frame at 5-5, however, Bian went on to post a 7-5 victory. In the super tiebreaker, Driscoll cruised to a 10-1 win.

  • MIT concludes its road trip on Saturday, April 4 when it visits NEWMAC rival Wheaton College for a 12:00 PM match.
