CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The No. 23 MIT men's heavyweight crew team lost a pair of close races to Wesleyan University (Conn.) on Sunday morning on the Charles River. The teams raced in great conditions on a cool and foggy morning that saw Wesleyan defeat MIT by less than a second in both the varsity and second varsity races.

VARSITY EIGHT (1V+):

• Results: 2nd of 2 (6:02.4) 
• Lineup: C. Arnav Aggarwal; 8. Nielsen Euvrard; 7. James Cabot; 6. Sam Dowd; 5. Gunnar Kohler; 4. Calvin Hrycay; 3. August Berne; 2. Jonathan Wang; 1. Drake Elliott 
• Wesleyan got off to a fast start before settling at 38 strokes per minute, opening up a full-length lead on MIT at the 700-meter mark. The Engineers gained ground over the second half of the race but ultimately came up short, as Wesleyan finished in 6:01.5 and MIT finished in 6:02.4. 

SECOND VARSITY EIGHT (2V+):

• Results: 2nd of 2 (6:15.1) 
• Lineup: C. Maddie Taylor; 8. Matt Tyburski; 7. Fin Duffy; 6. Sam Warman; 5. Declan King; 4. Rainer Arendt; 3. Harrison Scarrow; 2. Luke Pittaro; 1. Joseph Ortega 
• The 2V8+ race followed a similar script to the varsity race, as Wesleyan had a full-length lead by the 700-meter mark. MIT fought back for the next 1300 meters, steadily gaining ground, but unable to overtake the Cardinals by the finish. Wesleyan finished in 6:14.3.
