WORCESTER, Mass. — The MIT baseball team rallied from a pair of early deficits before surging ahead with an eight-run seventh inning, including a grand slam from John Spivey, to defeat Clark University, 16-12, in NEWMAC action on a chilly Tuesday afternoon at the Granger Athletic Complex.
THE BASICS:
- Score: MIT 16, Clark 12
- Records: MIT (9-11 Overall, 6-1 NEWMAC); Clark (14-8 Overall; 2-3 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After MIT left a pair of runners stranded in the top half of the second inning, the Cougars got on the board first, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning courtesy of a two-RBI single from Alfonso Jalil.
- The Engineers cut the lead in half in the top half of the third, as MIT's Dalton Chi walked to open the inning and later scored on a Zev Moore RBI single to left field.
- Now leading 2-1, Clark put up four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend its lead to 6-1.
- Faced with its biggest deficit of the day, a five-run MIT rally in the top of the fifth inning erased the Clark lead and tied the game at 6-6. Chi was the first and last batter in the inning as the Engineers batted around, scoring five runs on three walks and three hits, including a two-RBI single back up the middle by John Dwyer.
- Clark took the lead back in the sixth inning when Dom Mariani doubled down the left field line to bring a pair of runs home and make the score 8-6.
- Trailing again, MIT went back to work, this time plating eight runs as part of a seventh inning that saw Chi, Owen Malone, and Zev Moore also drive in runs to push the Engineers back out in front. Moore's RBI single was followed by a walk to Joey Severson that loaded the bases for Spivey. Spivey took the first pitch he saw out to left for his first career grand slam to give MIT a 14-8 lead.
- Mariani countered for Clark in the seventh, hitting a three-run home run that brought the Cougars back within three, 14-11. However, the Engineers added insurance in the ninth thanks to Maximo Del Pino's two-RBI double that made the score 16-11.
- Clark got one run back in the bottom of the ninth but could not rally from the five-run deficit as Chase Rubin struck out Cole Camara to end the game, 16-12.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Chi reached base to open the first, third and fifth innings, registering a leadoff triple to start the game, a walk in the third, and a single in the fifth. He finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two walks.
- Dwyer and James Dempsey also finished with three hits for the Engineers, with Dwyer scoring three runs and driving in a pair.
- MIT starting pitcher Thomas Grisamore battled his way through 4.0 innings, throwing 80 pitches and striking out six while giving up six runs, all earned, in a no-decision.
- Seven different Engineers drove in runs in the contest, with Spivey leading the way with four thanks to his grand slam.
