Baseball Falls to No. 22 Tufts, 15-3

MEDFORD, Mass.  —  Dalton Chi hit a lead off home run in the top of the first inning and Zev Moore tallied a two-RBI double in the sixth, but the MIT baseball team dropped a 15-3 final in seven innings to No. 22 Tufts University on Wednesday afternoon at Sol Gittleman Park.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Tufts 15, MIT 3 (7 inn.)
  • Records: No. 22 Tufts (16-5 Overall); MIT (9-12 Overall)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Chi took a 3-1 pitch from Tufts starter Mark Herlihy out to right field to lead off the game and give MIT a quick 1-0 lead. Chi's solo shot was the only blemish on the day for Herlihy, as the Tufts starter went 5.0 innings, striking out four and giving up just the home run to Chi.
  • After stranding a base runner in the bottom of the first, Tufts scored four runs in the second as a James Henshon RBI triple to right drove in the final run of the inning to give the Jumbos a 4-1 lead.
  • Tufts put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fourth, scoring seven runs on four hits to take an 11-1 advantage. AJ Seidel and Tate Bannish each drove in a pair of runs in the inning.
  • The Engineers did not have another base runner until the top of the sixth inning when Herlihy left the contest. Tufts reliever Lachlan Ellis walked Hanvin Lee to open the inning. Yamato Takahashi then popped up on the infield before Chi reached on a walk to put a pair of runners on base. Jack Finnegan followed with a single to right that loaded the bases. Zev Moore delivered with the bases loaded, hitting a double to right center to score two runs. With MIT now trailing 11-3, Mitchell Hwang entered for Ellis and ended the MIT rally. Ellis got Louis Hernandez to strike out before Tufts' first baseman Max Pavlik made an impressive play on a liner off the bat of Owen Malone to end the threat.
  • The Jumbos countered the MIT rally with four more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Seidel delivered again for Tufts, this time clearing the bases with a double to left field off of MIT reliever Tye Phoenix. Another RBI hit from Henshon helped push the hosts ahead, 15-3. MIT went 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh inning to end the game via the ten run rule.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Chi finished the day 1-for-2 with a walk and a pair of runs scored for MIT.
  • Seidel had five RBIs to lead the Tufts attack. He was one of five Jumbos to finish with multiple RBIs on the day.
  • The Engineers used seven different pitchers in the contest as starter Julian Murray took the loss after giving up four earned runs in 1.2 innings.

UP NEXT:

  • MIT returns to NEWMAC play on Saturday, April 11 with a doubleheader at Babson College. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
