Women’s Lacrosse Holds Off Endicott for 16-13 Victory

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Despite a late rally by Endicott College, the MIT women's lacrosse team held on for a 16-13 victory in non-conference action on Tuesday night. Loralei Quinn produced five groundballs and three caused turnovers for the Engineers while Mia Samarjian generated four goals and one assist for the Gulls.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 16, Endicott 13
  • Records: MIT (10-3 Overall); Endicott (8-3 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Samarjian found the back of the net after 41 seconds expired and then Grace McAfee increased Endicott's lead less than a minute later. MIT replied with four goals in a row with Ashley Thomas being a factor in three of them as she earned assists on blasts by Jillian Butler and Nina Petulla while also scoring an unassisted goal. The Gulls countered with a free position goal from Mia Smith and another goal by Samarjian to tie the game at 4-4.
  • Both teams recorded back-to-back goals throughout the second quarter, moving the score to 6-6 with 3:51 on the clock. However, MIT put together another four-goal run down the stretch. A solo effort by Thomas started the surge which was followed by a player-advantage goal from Annica Lam that was set up by Gwen Flusche. Flusche added her own extra player goal and then Thomas gave the Engineers a 10-6 advantage with 19 seconds remaining before halftime.
  • MIT carried the momentum into the third quarter as its margin grew to 13-6 at the 8:34 mark. Lam earned an assist on Flusche's goal while Lam's goal sandwiched one from Samantha Moorhead. Leah Black ended Endicott's scoring drought with 7:09 on the clock; however, Thomas buried a player-advantage free-position goal. Abbie Belleville replied with her own player-advantage free-position goal to make the score 14-8 late in the period.
  • Lam increased the Engineers' cushion 2:23 into the fourth quarter, but Ava Amara and Black quickly generated back-to-back goals, bringing the Gulls within 15-10 at the 11:18 mark. The score remained unchanged until an unassisted goal by Alexis Reinard with 6:33 to play.
  • Samarjian started Endicott's late rally with 4:20 on the clock and after a possession clock violation by the hosts, Black scored on a pass from Kenzie Velsmid with 2:03 remaining. Velsmid collected the ensuing draw control and went immediately to net, trimming the deficit to 16-13 with 1:52 to go. During the resulting draw, a foul resulted in a player advantage for MIT, which maintained possession until time expired.
