CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In the season opener for both squads on Tuesday night at Jack Barry Field, the MIT field hockey team defeated Simmons University, 4-0.
Janie Thomas posted two goals,
Ingrid Tomovski earned two assists and head coach
Megan Caveny notched her first career victory for the Engineers.
THE BASICS:
- Score: MIT 4, Simmons 0

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- MIT controlled the action in the first quarter as it generated five shots – three on goal and two blocked – and five penalty corners, however, the game was a scoreless affair until the 11th minute. During a fast break, Leaya Cleary sent a quick pass from the near side to Thomas who redirected it towards the far post.
- The Engineers increased their lead to 2-0 courtesy of another Thomas goal after 2:25 elapsed in the second quarter. Remy Caspar sent a cross from the near side through traffic and it was one-timed by Thomas.
- MIT doubled its advantage in the third quarter with Tomovski earning assists on both tallies. During a penalty corner in the 38th minute, she passed the ball through the arc to the near post where Jane Tortorella knocked it in. Just over four minutes later, the Engineers recorded what proved to be the final goal of the night. Following a penalty corner, a shot by Tomovski was saved. However, she corralled the rebound, it deflected upwards and Charlotte Lee tapped the arcing ball into the net.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- In goal, Alexia Ninios was not forced to make a save in her first career start for the Engineers.
- Hayley Bright amassed 19 saves for Simmons while Piper Rickman contributed a defensive save.
- MIT led the way in shots (33-1), shots on goal (24-0), and penalty corners (15-1).
- This was the first meeting between both teams since 2018.
