Comeback Attempt Falls Short as Union Tops Field Hockey, 3-2, in Overtime

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – A goal by Janie Thomas with 1:46 left in regulation tied the game but Union College scored the game winner with 2:22 remaining in overtime to defeat MIT, 3-2, in a non-conference field hockey game on Saturday afternoon.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: Union 3, MIT 2 (OT)
  • Records: MIT (2-2 Overall); Union (2-1 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Ingrid Tomovski opened the scoring just 2:35 into the game with a blast from distance that went to the top right side of the cage. Union countered with three penalty corners and four shots in a span of 1:18, but Alexia Ninios came up with three saves for MIT. On the other end of the field, the Engineers generated three penalty corners and three shots on goal, but they could not increase their lead.
  • The Garnet Chargers controlled the action in the second quarter as they had a 7-1 advantage in shots (5-0 on goal) and a 6-0 margin in penalty corners. During the hosts' final penalty corner of the period, Maddie Greco evened the score on a pass from Caroline Ranucci with 3:48 on the clock.
  • Union continued to have the upper hand in the third quarter as it held MIT without a shot or penalty corner, however, Ninios turned away three shots to preserve the deadlock.
  • The Garnet Chargers ended the stalemate when Macy Goodwin found the back of the cage with 8:01 left to play. Ninios came up with a save in the 54th minute while the Engineers followed with two shots on goal and a penalty corner. Despite being down a player due to a green card, Thomas tied the game with 1:46 to go. She stole the ball at the top of the circle and in a one-on-one with goalie Tess Parker, Thomas sent a blast from the near side to the middle of the cage. Union made a final surge down the stretch, tallying two penalty corners and a pair of shots on goal, but the score remained unchanged.
  • The Garnet Chargers generated six shots during the first five minutes of overtime, however, Ninios came up with five saves including a stop on a penalty stroke just 2:34 into the extra session. MIT earned a penalty corner in the 67th minute but it could not produce a shot. During its next trip down the field, Union was awarded a penalty corner which set up the game-winning goal by Rachel Ostiguy.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Ninios amassed 20 saves, just two shy of tying the program record that was set by Kathleen Rubritz '03 in 2002.
  • Parker ended the game with five saves.
  • The Garnet Chargers led the way in shots (28-9), shots on goal (23-7), and penalty corners (17-5).
