No. 2 Tufts Tops Field Hockey, 4-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 2 Tufts University found the back of the cage twice in the first quarter, but the MIT field hockey team held the visitors scoreless until the fourth quarter, ultimately falling by a 4-0 margin on Tuesday night. The Jumbos featured a balanced attack as four different players got into the scoring column with two other players earning an assist.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 2 Tufts 4, MIT 0
  • Records: MIT (2-3 Overall); No. 2 Tufts (4-0 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Tufts opened the scoring after 2:35 expired when a pass from Reagan Malo made its way through traffic in front of the goal and it was redirected by Hannah Murray at the far post. The Jumbos continued to press, eventually increasing its lead with 1:12 remaining in the quarter. In transition, Eleanor Helm unleashed a clear shot that went from the near side of the circle to the back of the cage.
  • Tufts continued to control the action in the second quarter as it recorded seven shots (five on goal) and four penalty corners. MIT's best attempt to get on the scoreboard came inside the final minute of the frame as a penalty corner resulted in a shot by Janie Thomas but it was wide.
  • The Engineers carried the momentum into the third quarter as they produced two more shots and a penalty corner. The Jumbos replied with six shots (four on goal) and one penalty corner, however, the score remained unchanged. MIT put together another late surge as a penalty corner saw a shot by Grace Johnson get blocked by a defender.
  • The Engineers almost ended the shutout in the 47th minute when a pass from Ingrid Tomovski deflected off Thomas's stick right in front of goalie Isabel Ginns but it was swatted away. Tufts replied with two goals in a span of 1:16 to put the game out of reach. In the 49th minute, Eleanor Luft scored after a scramble in front of the cage and then during a penalty corner, Claire Casey sent a blast from the top of the circle on a pass by Lilly Ragusa. MIT was awarded a penalty corner with just under three minutes remaining, however, another shot by Thomas was wide.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Alexia Ninios collected 11 saves for the Engineers while Ginns was forced to make one save.
  • The Jumbos ended the night with advantages in shots (23-6), shots on goal (15-1), and penalty corners (9-4).
UP NEXT:
  • Both teams will face conference opponents on Saturday, September 19 at 12:00 PM.
  • MIT will visit Mount Holyoke College for its NEWMAC opener while Tufts will host NESCAC foe Connecticut College.
