Field Hockey Rallies to Defeat Mount Holyoke, 3-2, in NEWMAC Opener

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Two goals in the fourth quarter, including the game-winner by Janie Thomas with 20 seconds remaining in regulation, helped MIT capture a 3-2 come-from-behind victory at Mount Holyoke College in the NEWMAC field hockey opener for both squads on Saturday afternoon.

  • Score: MIT 3, Mount Holyoke 2

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The first quarter was defensive battle as there was a total of five shots and a penalty corner. However, Mount Holyoke had the best chance to open the scoring in the 11th minute when MJ Owens lobbed the ball into the circle ahead of Zoey Candito. Alexia Ninios attempted to clear it out, but the ball bounced back to Candito who ran to the far post. Ninios then made a diving stop on the shot and Audrey Oh corralled the loose ball, ending the scoring threat.
  • MIT controlled the action in the second stanza, producing a 9-0 advantage in shots and a 3-0 margin in penalty corners. The Engineers ended the stalemate during a penalty corner in the 22nd minute. A shot by Thomas was saved but the ball bounced up and it was knocked into the cage by Oh while it was in midair.
  • The Lyons got onto the scoreboard after 2:20 elapsed in the third quarter when Owens intercepted a pass in MIT's defensive circle and quickly put it past Ninios for the equalizer. The hosts then took a 2-1 lead almost four minutes later as Scout Climie found Diane Lee who sent a low shot through traffic to the near post. Mount Holyoke continued to attack, but Ninios made three saves and Drew Hussar added a defensive save.
  • MIT tied the game just 1:55 into the fourth quarter when a shot by Hussar was saved during a penalty corner, but she collected the rebound and slipped the ball just inside the far post.
  • The Lyons generated a shot on goal and a penalty corner; however, the back-and-forth play resumed until the Engineers made a final surge during the last 3:25 of regulation. After three penalty corners and five shots (three on goal), MIT earned a penalty corner with 27 seconds on the clock. Meredith Wu inserted the ball, and Thomas sent a blast from the top of the circle to complete the comeback.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Ninios made five saves while Addie Oakes turned away seven shots.
  • The Engineers led the way in shots (24-10), shots on goal (11-8), and penalty corners (10-2).
