Claire Zhang's Hat Trick Leads No. 5 Women's Soccer to 3-0 Win Over Bridgewater St.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – It took just under seven minutes for Claire Zhang to score her first career hat trick as the No. 5 MIT women's soccer team earned a 3-0 victory over Bridgewater St. on Wednesday afternoon on Roberts Field. 
 
THE BASICS: 

  • Score: MIT 3, Bridgewater St. 0 
  • Records: MIT (5-0-1 Overall), Bridgewater St. (1-4-0 Overall) 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Ayla Sumer put a cross to the front of the cage for Zhang at 4:20 in the first to give MIT the early advantage. 
  • Zhang got another one just five minutes later, this time on a pass from Arianna Doss at 9:42. Doss found a wide-open Zhang in front of the goal where she deposited the shot into the far corner of the net. 
  • Doss attempted to play a pass to Zhang but saw her shot blocked. She quickly regained possession and found Zhang in front of the goal where she spun past her defenders and put a strike past a diving Marcy Clapp for the hat-trick at 11:17. 
  • MIT looked to make it a four-goal lead, but Clapp made a diving save on a shot attempt from Arianna Chin

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • This is the second hat trick for an Engineer this season.  
  • Zhang now has four goals this season. 
  • Doss tallied a career-best two assists in the match. 
  • Sumer got her first assist of the season. 
  • Maddy Noll got the first 45 minutes of action in goal for MIT and did not face a shot. Kaitlyn Strine played the second half and made one save. Noll earned her third win of the season. 

UP NEXT: 

  • The Engineers are right back on Roberts Field tomorrow, Thursday, September 17 for a 6:00 PM contest against Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Bears will travel to MCLA on Saturday, September 19 for a 12:00 PM match.
