No. 5 Women's Soccer Opens NEWMAC Play With a 5-1 Road Win Over Smith

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The No. 5 MIT women's soccer team got two goals from Arianna Doss as the Engineers opened NEWMAC play with a 5-1 road win over Smith on Saturday afternoon. 
 
THE BASICS: 

  • Score: MIT 5, Smith 1 
  • Records: MIT (7-0-1 Overall, 1-0-0 NEWMAC), Smith (0-5-1 Overall, 0-1-0 NEWMAC)  

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Ella Conopask played a pass with the outside of her foot to Gabriela de Brito outside the box, where de Brito powered a long shot into the far-right corner of the net at 12:37. 
  • Ayla Sumer lifted a looping ball into the front of the goal that found Arianna Doss. After Doss had her first attempt saved by Blair Pasarkar, she converted the rebound at 17:40 to give MIT a 2-0 lead. 
  • de Brito set up Madelyn Popilek for a header goal off the corner kick at 25:15 to increase the Engineers lead to 3-0. 
  • Skye Williams put a pass over to Lauren Won, whose cross-goal shot trickled in off the post with just over a minute remaining in the first half. 
  • Doss made two nice moves around Bears defenders and converted her second goal of the game just under five minutes into the second half to give MIT a five-goal advantage. 
  • Off a free kick from Charli Kellaway, Una Keller was able to head the ball into the goal at 58:57. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Engineers have not lost to Smith since 2015 and improve to 25-19-1 all-time against the Bears. 
  • MIT has outscored its opponents 23-2 in eight games this season. 
  • The Engineer defense allowed just four shots with three on goal while the offense put up 27 with 17 on target. 
  • Maddy Noll played the first half and made one save while Cassidy Jennings made one save in the second half. 
  • Doss matched her career-best with two goals. de Brito got her second goal of the year and Won got her first. de Brito also set a new career best with her three-point performance. 

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT returns to the pitch on Friday, September 25 as they host Tufts for a 6:00 PM contest. The Bears are back on the field on Saturday, September 26 for a 7:00 PM match at Springfield.
