Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 5 Tufts Tops No. 4 MIT, 2-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 5 Tufts scored a pair of first half goals to defeat the No. 4 MIT women's soccer team, 2-0, in a non-conference match up of two of the nation's top five ranked teams on Friday night at Roberts Field. 

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Tufts 2, MIT 0 
  • Records: No. 4 MIT (7-1-1 Overall), No. 5 Tufts (4-0-2 Overall) 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Waverly Sumner scored her third goal of the season just under six minutes into the game, taking advantage of a miscue by the MIT backline to put the Jumbos up, 1-0.  
  • The second Tufts goal came on a set piece at 21:55 as Maren Jones dropped a corner kick in front of the MIT goal that Maile Lung settled on a second attempt and snuck past MIT goalkeeper Maddy Noll. 
  • MIT outshot Tufts in the first half, 8-3, but all three Tufts attempts were on target and two found the back of the net. 
  • The Engineers continued to pressure Tufts in the second half, holding a 9-1 edge in shots, but would ultimately end the contest with just a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. 
  • Tufts goalkeeper Gigi Edwards finished the contest with three saves, all in the second half. She also got some help from her defenders in the final minutes of the contest when a looping header from Ayla Sumer was cleared away by the Tufts backline on a frantic corner kick.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Sumer was a consistent threat for MIT, finishing with a game-high four shots.  
  • Tufts has won the last five meetings between the two teams via shutout. 
  • The last MIT win in the series was a 3-0 victory in 2021. 
  • The last time the game didn't involve a shutout was 2017, a 2-1 MIT win.

  • MIT will host Wellesley in a NEWMAC Contest on Wednesday, September 30 at 4:00 PM on Roberts Field. The Jumbos will host Husson on Sunday, September 27 at 11:30 AM.
