Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 5 Women's Soccer tops Wellesley, 5-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 5 MIT women's soccer team got two goals each from Ayla Sumer and Claire Zhang to earn a 5-0 victory over Wellesley on Wednesday afternoon at Roberts Field. 
 
THE BASICS: 

  • Score: MIT 5, Wellesley 0 
  • Records: No. 5 MIT (8-1-1 Overall, 2-0-0 NEWMAC), Wellesley (3-4-2 Overall, 0-1-1 NEWMAC) 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Arianna Doss played a pass in front of the goal to Andrea Cummings, who sent a one-touch pass to Sumer for a shot into the corner of the net just over 12 minutes into the match. 
  • Sumer completed her first-half brace by beating her Blue defender and powering a shot into the goal at 24:51.  
  • Olivia Lore made a diving save on a shot by Lauren Won; however, the rebound fell to Zhang, who lifted the ball over the crowd in front and into the goal to give MIT a 3-0 lead at 43:39. 
  • After being fouled in the box, Madelyn Popilek stepped up and converted the penalty kick just over five minutes into the second half to increase MIT's advantage to 4-0. 
  • Chloe Dai sent a pass through the middle to Zhang, who scored her second goal of the match at 77:23 as the Engineers secured a 5-0 victory. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • In two NEWMAC matches this season, the Engineers have scored 10 goals. 
  • MIT is unbeaten in its last 36 NEWMAC matches with its last loss coming on October 18, 2023, on the road against Babson. The Engineers have not dropped a home NEWMAC contest since 2022.  
  • Zhang now leads the team with six goals. 
  • Sumer's career-high two-goal performance gives her three goals on the season 
  • The Engineers' defense notched its seventh clean sheet, allowing just five shots.  
  • Maddy Noll got the start to earn her sixth win while Cassidy Jennings made one save in the second half. 
  • Lore finished with nine saves for Wellesley. 

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT is back on the field on Saturday, October 3 for a 4:30 PM contest against Coast Guard. The Blue will head to Smith on October 3 for a 12:00 PM match.
