Connecticut College Holds on to Defeat Field Hockey, 3-2

NEW LONDON, Conn. – MIT scored twice in the fourth quarter, but it could not complete the comeback as Connecticut College held on for a 3-2 victory in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday night. Grace Johnson and Ingrid Tomovski found the back of the cage for the Engineers in what was the first meeting between both programs.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: Connecticut College 3, MIT 2
  • Records: MIT (4-5 Overall); Connecticut College (2-5 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Connecticut College opened the scoring when Sadie Gearan connected on a pass from Alex Flynn during a penalty corner after 5:44 elapsed. MIT created some momentum during the last 4:30 of the first quarter as it earned two penalty corners with the second resulting in a shot by Meredith Wu, but it was saved by Isabella Carnall.
  • After some back-and-forth play, the Camels produced two goals in a span of 1:02 in the second quarter. In the 26th minute, a shot by Eliza Farwell bounced off the post, deflected off goalie Alexia Ninios and was then tapped in by Alexa Blaeser. Frances Brisbane extended the lead to 3-0 courtesy of a penalty stroke goal.
  • The third quarter was a scoreless affair that saw the hosts have a 3-1 margin in shots, one of which was saved by Ninios, and a 2-1 edge in penalty corners.
  • The Engineers ended the shutout 2:02 in the fourth quarter on a penalty corner. Janie Thomas hit the ball to the cage, and it slowly made its way to Johnson who redirected it in front of the cage. MIT continued to press, eventually cutting its deficit in half on a blast from Tomovski at the top of the circle that made its way through traffic with 3:02 remaining. The Engineers maintained the pressure, earning three penalty corners during the final 1:18, the last resulting in a deflection by Audrey Oh that went wide with 22 seconds to go.
