Football Cruises to Season-Opening Win at Nichols, 35-7

DUDLEY, Mass. – Sophomore quarterback Ryan Treptow completed 18-of-26 passes for 180 yards, throwing four touchdowns to four different receivers, while adding 64 of MIT's 323 yards on the ground to lead the Engineers' football team to a 35-7 non-conference victory over Nichols College on Friday night at Michael J. Vendetti Field. 

Linebacker Wyatt Alford totaled seven tackles to lead an MIT defense that limited Nichols to just eight yards rushing. Linebacker Joshua Tang recorded his first interception of the season in the fourth quarter to help set up Colter Mahabir's third career rushing touchdown and seal the 35-7 victory. 

THE BASICS:

  • Score: MIT 35, Nichols 7
  • Records: MIT 1-0 Overall, Nichols 0-1 Overall 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The first drive of the MIT season ended with a touchdown. The Engineers moved the ball 75 yards on eight plays as Treptow connected with Jimmy Connors on a short pass to the line of scrimmage that Connors took right into the end zone. Connors rushed four times on the opening drive, including a 33-yard gain to move the ball inside the red zone, before scoring on the short completion. Connors finished the game with 52 yards on the ground.
  • Nichols went three-and-out on its first possession. Jacob Dell set the tone for the MIT defense with a tackle for a seven-yard loss on the Engineers' first defensive play of the season.  
  • An 11-play MIT drive on the next possession ended without points as Luke Pelletier's field goal attempt from 27 yards out was no good at 6:03 of the first. However, the MIT defense forced another three-and-out on the next Nichols possession to give the MIT offense the ball back at the start of the second quarter. 
  • The offense continued to move the ball at the start of the second, moving 56 yards over 10 plays before a Brendan Spellman fumble at the three-yard line brought the drive to an abrupt halt.  
  • Buried deep in its own territory, Nichols moved the ball to its own 22-yard line but was undone by a false start penalty that forced the Bison into a third-and-long situation, and the MIT defense forced a punt. 
  • MIT's offense found its stride over its final two possessions of the half, scoring a pair of touchdowns to send the Engineers into the break with a 21-0 lead. Treptow connected with Ezekiel Dube-Garrett for a 21-yard touchdown reception at 4:54.  
  • The third MIT score of the half capped off a seven-play, 76-yard drive with Treptow finding Michael Dennison deep down the middle of the field for a 43-yard touchdown reception. Treptow looked to have connected with Keegan Doody for a score earlier in the drive, but the touchdown was negated by an MIT penalty. However, it only took the Engineers three plays to get the score back on the board.  
  • After seeing his first half score wiped out, Doody found the end zone in the third quarter, catching a 22-yard pass from Treptow that made the MIT lead 28-7 at 9:59. The score countered Nichols' only touchdown drive of the game, a 65-yard touchdown pass from Ethan LaGuardia to Will Migliaccio on the first Bison drive of the second half. 
  • The MIT defense controlled the remainder of the contest. Nichols turned the ball over on down on its next possession and saw its final three drives result in two punts and Tang's interception. The interception at 9:16 of the fourth set up the final Engineer touchdown, with Mahabir rushing four times on the drive, including a 13-yard touchdown scamper. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Engineers tallied 509 yards of total offense, while Nichols finished with 188 passing yards and 196 yards of total offense. 
  • 13 different MIT players recorded multiple tackles, including Jaiden Cadotte who had two tackles for loss. 
  • Tang's interception was the second of his career. 
  • Spellman ended the day leading all rushers with 84 yards gained. 
  • Pelletier was 5-for-5 on extra points.  
  • MIT is now 17-10 all-time against Nichols. 

UP NEXT:

  • MIT will play its home opener next Saturday, September 12 at 12:00 PM when the Engineers welcome New England College to Steinbrenner Stadium.
