NEW YORK, N.Y. – On its first road trip to United Volleyball Conference (UVC) rival NYU, the No. 11 MIT men's volleyball team swept the No. 13 Violets, 25-16, 25-20, 25-21, on Wednesday night. Junior Chris Omahan (Mount Vernon, Ohio) paced the Engineers' balanced attack with nine kills to go along with a .400 hitting performance, six digs, and two aces.

Freshman Martin Krasuski (Aurora, Ill.) recorded seven kills and a .467 hitting percentage as junior Andrew Busse (Mount Prospect, Ill.) posted seven kills, a .545 hitting effort, and two blocks for MIT. Senior Paul Syta (Fairport, N.Y.) racked up 17 assists, five kills, four blocks, and two aces while classmate Evan Wang (Saratoga, Calif.) registered 12 assists and four digs. Junior Alex Klein (San Diego, Calif.) chipped in five kills as classmate Bradley Gross (Centreville, Va.) contributed two blocks. Sophomore Brendan Chang (Laytonsville, Md.) rounded out the squad with seven digs.

Following eight ties and four lead changes in the first set, NYU pulled ahead at 14-11. MIT responded with a strike by Busse that sparked a 14-2 run as the visitors claimed the set on a block by Syta and Gross.

The Engineers carried the momentum into the second stanza as they jumped out to a 7-2 advantage. The Violets narrowed the gap to three (13-10) but this was as close as they would get as a service error gave MIT set point at 24-18. A hitting error and a kill kept NYU alive; however, a blast from freshman Sean Kropp (Fairless Hills, Pa.) ended the frame.

The Violets maintained a slight lead throughout most of the third set as block put them up, 19-15, and resulted in a timeout by the Cardinal and Gray. Following the break, Gross recorded a kill, Krasuski earned an ace, Klein picked up a kill and then collaborated with Gross for a block that evened the score. After its own timeout NYU registered a kill; however, MIT capitalized on an Omahan strike and a hitting miscue to stay ahead at 21-20. A serving error knotted the frame but Omahan generated back-to-back kills while a Syta strike gave the Engineers match point. The evening ended on the ensuing rally courtesy of a hitting error by the hosts.

MIT (7-2, 4-1 UVC) returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 15 when it travels to local foe Wentworth Institute of Technology for a tri-match with City College of New York.
