Box Score NORTHBORO, Mass. – MIT scored at least one run in each of the first three innings this afternoon against Suffolk University and used the strong start to take an 8-2 win over the Rams in a non-conference baseball matchup. Senior Reid Bishop (Cypress, Texas) homered for a second straight day and drove in two runs, while junior Nate Rodman (Corvallis, Ore.) also drove in a pair for the Engineers, who picked up their first win of the season.
Suffolk (4-7) scored first in the game, getting a double from sophomore Matt Brenner (Eliot, Maine) and an RBI single by senior JC Collette (Amesbury, Mass). MIT (1-1) answered in the bottom half of the inning with four runs to give it a lead that would hold for the rest of the game. Sophomore John Drago (Peoria, Ariz.) led off with a double before freshman Austin Filiere (Chandler, Ariz.) walked. After Drago advanced to third on a wild pitch, he came around to score on an errant pick off attempt at first, tying the game. Senior Parker Tew (Chapel Hill, N.C.) followed with an RBI double and the Engineers completed the uprising with an RBI single from Rodman and an RBI double by Bishop.
That was all the run support that junior Alan Wang (Paoli, Pa.) would need for MIT. After giving up the run in the first he allowed just one more hit over the next four innings to record his first victory of the season. He allowed a total of three hits and the one run over his five innings on the mound, striking out four and walking just one. Freshman Will Loucks (Las Vegas, Nev.) followed Wang to the mound for the Engineers and made a solid collegiate debut. He finished the game out, giving up just a pair of hits and an unearned run while striking out six against a pair of walks to pick up a four-inning save.
MIT padded its lead in the second when freshman Garrett Greenwood (Edmond, Okla.) led off with a double, stole third, and then scored on a wild pitch. The Engineers added a second score in the inning on a error and then picked up another run in the third when Bishop homered to left to make it 7-1.
It stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth when senior Hayden Cornwell (Newport Beach, Calif.) reached on an error, stole second, and came around on a Rodman's base hit to center. The duo of Brenner and Collette were also responsible for Suffolk's other run. In the top of the eighth Brenner reached on an error, moved up on a groundout and then scored on Collette's single to left.
Suffolk's starter, senior Josh Desai (Shrewsbury, Mass.) wound up going six innings for the Rams. He allowed all eight of MIT's runs, seven of which were earned, on seven hits while striking out 10 and walking four. Sophomore Chuck Gibson (Malden, Mass.) and senior Paul Pollano (North Andover, Mass.) each pitched an inning of scoreless relief for Suffolk.
