Box Score CLAREMONT, Calif. – In its third game on its spring trip to California, MIT used a pair of four-run innings to take a five run lead and then held off a late charge by Claremont-Mudd-Scripts to take a 9-6 baseball win on Wednesday afternoon. In a game that saw 28 total hits, freshman Garrett Greenwood (Edmond, Okla.) was 4-for-4 at the plate and also picked up the save on the mound.
The game remained scoreless for two innings before senior K.J. Parent (Knoxville, Tenn.) singled, moved to third on a Greenwood double and then scored on a ground out off the bat of sophomore John Drago (Peoria, Ariz.).
CMS went ahead in the bottom of the frame on three hits from Michael Gose, Alex Clemens and a big RBI double by MacKenzie Menthen. The Stags held their 2-1 lead for a complete inning before MIT put up a big four-run inning in the fifth that was highlighted by a two-run double by senior Parker Tew (Chapel Hill, N.C.).
In the bottom of fifth, Anderson came up again with runners in scoring position and came through for the Stags, plating Gose. Gose was 3-for-5 on the day including a triple in the bottom of the ninth.
Another big inning for the Engineers gave MIT a 9-3 advantage in the seventh. Five hits in the frame did the trick for MIT, including a run-scoring triple from Drago, and RBI single from freshman Austin Filiere (Chandler, Ariz.) and a base hit by junior Nate Rodman (Corvalis, Ore.) that brought home a pair.
CMS rallied back, doubling its runs in the final two innings. Trey Smith and Evan Opperman recorded the RBIs in the eighth. Opperman also had a big day at the plate with three hits.
In the ninth, Gose scored after his leadoff triple but then Greenwood came in from center field to pitch and secured the win and the save for MIT.
