Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass. – Babson College unleashed a 17-hit attack this afternoon that resulted in an 11-4 win for the Beavers over MIT in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball game this afternoon. Senior Dillon Gonzalez (Beverly, Mass.) and sophomore Jake Weiss (Irvine, Calif.) both had three hits, and freshman Brett Ender (Skillman, N.J.) drove in three runs for Babson. Freshman Garrett Greenwood (Edmond, Okla.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while senior Parker Tew (Chapel Hill, N.C.) doubled and drove in two runs to lead the Engineers.
MIT (9-6, 5-2 NEWMAC) jumped in front 1-0 in the top of the first when freshman Austin Filiere (Chandler, Ariz.) and Tew swatted back-to-back doubles. Babson (11-9, 7-3 NEWMAC) came right back in its half of the inning however, as Gonzalez homered to right center, a two-run shot, to put the Beavers up 2-1. The Beavers extended their lead an inning later as Shea led off with a double, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Rob Caggiano (Medford, Mass.), and came in to score on a single by Weiss to make it 3-1.
The Engineers made it a one-run game in the third when sophomore John Drago (Peoria, Ariz.) drove a pitch over the fence in right center. MIT then regained the advantage with a pair of runs in the fifth. Junior Kendall Helbert (St. Louis, Mo.) reached on an error, Greenwood singled to center and Drago walked to load the bases with one out. Filiere drew a walk to force in a run and Tew followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Greenwood before Babson senior Barrett O'Neill (Ashland, Mass.) escaped further damage with an inning-ending ground out.
The Beavers wasted little time going back in front as they rallied for four runs, all with two outs, to take the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. Ender drove in Weiss with a single to center to tie the game at 4-4, and senior Sean MacPhee (Framingham, Mass.) and Zanca came through with back-to-back seeing-eye singles to put Babson on top 6-4. MIT junior Eric Tu (San Roman, Calif.) came out of the bullpen to relieve classmate Alan Wang (Paoli, Calif.), but Shea greeted him with a double down the left field line that plated MacPhee for a 7-4 lead.
Babson followed their four-run fifth with three more in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Halpin drove in Ayala with a one-out single through the right side, and Ender came through with a two-run double to left center for a 10-4 lead.
O'Neill (4-1) allowed two earned runs on six hits while striking out seven over eight innings to earn the win. Wang (3-1) suffered his first loss of the year for MIT, giving up seven runs on 11 hits in just 4.2 innings. Tu allowed three runs on five hits in 1.1 innings, while sophomore Jason Morrison (Frisco, Texas) struck out two while giving up a run over the final two innings.
The teams will complete their three-game series with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday at Govoni Field.
