Big Innings Carry MIT Past Clark

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. – A pair of six-run innings and a solid performance from its bullpen carried the MIT baseball team past Clark University, 17-3, in the final game of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season schedule for the Engineers. The victory tied MIT with Wheaton College in the final Eastern Division standings and, with the Engineers winning two of three last weekend against the Lyons, gives them the No. 1 seed in the upcoming NEWMAC baseball tournament.

MIT (17-9, 13-4) picked up an early run in the first inning when freshman Austin Filiere (Chandler, Ariz.) hit a solo home run, his 11th of the season. The Engineers then broke open the game in the second, scoring six times. Senior Reid Bishop (Cypress, Texas) led off with a double and came around to score on a base hit by senior Phil Reiser (Alpharetta, Ga.). A double by junior Kendall Helbert (St. Louis, Mo.) and a hit batter loaded the bases with Engineers and with one away Filiere doubled down the line in left to score a pair. He was then followed by a two-run single by senior Parker Tew (Chapel Hill, N.C.). Junior Nate Rodman (Corvallis, Ore.) completed the uprising with a double, the fourth of the inning, to plate Tew.

MIT added two more in the third when freshman Garrett Greenwood (Edmond, Okla.), with a runner on first, got a ball past the center fielder for an inside the park home run. Clark (11-15, 8-8 NEWMAC) got on the board in the bottom half of the inning, with senior Dennis Glynn (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) smacking a two-run homer to left. The Cougars added another to make it 9-3 when senior Daniel Lilma (Manchester, Conn.) singled, stole second, moved to third on a base hit by sophomore Adam Chochrek (Foxboro, Mass.) and scored on the play on a throwing error.

That was all that damage that MIT pitching would allow in the contest. Senior K.J. Parent (Knoxville, Tenn.) started and went four innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits. Senior Rob Bertucci (Belleville, Ill.) picked up the victory with three innings of one-hit relief, with sophomore Jason Morrison (Frisco, Texas) finishing up with two innings of one-hit ball.

MIT put the game out of reach with another six-run inning, this time in the sixth, an inning that was highlighted by Greenwood's three-run home run to right. Tew then finished off the scoring in the ninth with a two-run homer.

Tew finished with a 3-for-4 day with four RBI and two runs scored, with Filiere going 2-for-3 with three RBI and four runs scored. Greenwood drove in five runs, going 2-for-4, with Rodman and Reiser also picking up a pair of hits and driving in two. Freshman Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) led Clark with a pair of hits, with Glynn was the only Cougar to drive in runs with his pair.

MIT will play again tomorrow, hosting Western New England at Briggs Field starting at 3:30 p.m. Clark will play its final NEWMAC game of the season tomorrow when it hosts Babson College at 3:00 p.m.
