Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT overcame an early deficit to Western New England University with a four-run fifth inning and then held on to take a 5-4 non-conference baseball win this afternoon at Briggs Field over the Golden Bears. Senior Parker Tew (Chapel Hill, N.C.) had a pair of doubles and two RBI to lead the Engineers.
Western New England (14-15) scratched across a run in the first to take an early lead. With one down senior Matt Anziano (Belchertown, Mass.) was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a base hit by junior Doug Milne (Nesconset, N.Y.). A wild pitch put the runners and second and third for senior Steve Buckley (Monroe, Conn.) who singled to left to plate the run. MIT (18-9) got the run back in the bottom of the second when freshman Garrett Greenwood (Edmund, Okla.) started a two-out rally with a base hit. He moved up to second on a wild pitch and then scored on a single to right off the bat of senior Karl Sorensen (Blacksburg, Va.).
A run in the third gave Western New England the lead back, as a pair of singles and a ground out put runners on the corners for Milne, whose groundout to first scored the run. That would be all that MIT starter, freshman Will Loucks (Las Vegas, Nev.) would give up as he went six innings and scattered seven hits to pick up the victory.
MIT gave Loucks that victory with a four-run uprising in the fifth. Western New England starter, junior Chris Casey (Milford, Mass.) walked the bases loaded with one down, bringing in junior Tom Mahoney (Granville, Mass.) from the bullpen. Tew greeted him with a double to right; scoring two runs that gave the Engineers their first lead of the day. An infield hit by senior Hayden Cornwell (Newport Beach, Calif.) and a fielders choice play off the bat of senior Reid Bishop (Cypress, Texas) brought in the final two runs to make it 5-2.
That is where is stayed until the eighth when Western New England pulled back within a run. Three singles loaded the bases with one down for the Golden Bears, with a misplayed ground ball off the bat of Eduardo Colmenares (Caracas, Venezuela) allowing two runs to come home to make it 5-4.
That was all that Western New England would get, however, as junior Alan Wang (Paoli, Pa.) got the final two outs to extinguish the rally. Junior Eric Tu (San Roman, Calif.) came on in the ninth for MIT and allowed a walk, but struck out the side to record the save.
Tew was the only MIT hitter with more than one hit, finishing with a 3-for-4 day and the two RBI. Anziano, Buckley and junior Kevin Marciano (Pepperell, Mass.) all had a pair of hits for Western New England. Casey took the loss for the Golden Bears, allowing three hits and four runs over 4.1 innings. Sophomore Matt Thomas (Plainville, Conn.) threw the final two innings for Western New England, allowing just one hit.
MIT will play again tomorrow, hosting UMass Boston at 3:30 at Briggs Field. Western New England will play again on Friday when it will travel to Bridgewater State University for a 3:30 p.m. matchup.
