Box Score NORTHBORO, Mass. – WPI scored in each of the first three innings and then put the game away with two runs in the seventh and eighth to walk away with an 8-4 win over MIT in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball game this afternoon. Freshman Austin Filiere (Chandler, Ariz.) had a pair of hits to lead the Engineers, who dropped their first NEWMAC game of the season.
MIT (9-5, 5-1 NEWMAC) broke out on top in the first when Filiere hit a solo home run to left, his third of the season. WPI (14-10, 5-5 NEWMAC) answered in its half of the inning when junior Sean Greene (Hingham, Mass.) drew a leadoff walk and eventually came around to score on junior Alex Venditti's (Newton, Mass.) base hit.
WPI picked up a pair of singles to start the bottom of the second, putting runners on second and third after a sacrifice. Greene then picked up an infield single to third to score one run, with another run scoring on a throwing error on the play.
MIT answered with two runs in the top half of the third to tie things up at 3-3. An error and a walk put a pair aboard for senior Parker Tew (Chapel Hill, N.C.), who doubled to left center to plate both runs. A two-out walk, a single and a wild pitch put runners on second and third for WPI in the bottom half of inning, with the Engineers picking up an unearned run when a ground ball was misplayed into an error.
After three scoreless innings WPI put the game away with a pair of runs in the seventh and eighth. In the seventh the Engineers started the inning with a pair of walks, eventually loading the bases with one down after a sacrifice and an intentional walk. Senior Zach Blanchard (Warwick, R.I.) then plated one run with a sac fly before senior Matt Cote (Burrillville, R.I.) delivered an RBI single.
In the top of the eighth MIT loaded the bases with one down on a pair of walks and a single, but could only get one run across on a sac fly off the bat of junior Kendall Helbert (St. Louis, Mo.) that made it 6-4. In the bottom half of the inning, however, WPI loaded the bases with two down for Sean Kelly (Shrewsbury, Mass.) who delivered a two-run single up the middle.
Freshman Steven D'Agostino (Shrewsbury, Mass.), who entered the game in the eighth, then shut the door on MIT in the ninth, giving up just one hit in the inning as he collected the save.
