MIT Wraps Up Regular Season With 8-1 Win at St. Joseph's

Box Score

STANDISH, Maine – MIT's baseball team closed out its 2015 regular season on an up note this evening, wrapping things up with an 8-1 win against St. Joseph's College. Senior Hayden Cornwell (Newport Beach, Calif.) went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI, while freshman Zach Michaud (Moorestown, N.J.) had a strong start on the mound for the Engineers, allowing just one run over five innings of work.

The two squads traded runs in the first inning, with Cornwell following a two-out double from senior Parker Tew (Chapel Hill, N.C.) with a run-scoring base hit through the right side to put MIT (25-12) on top. St. Joseph's (26-17) tied it up in its half of the inning, getting two on via a walk and a single. A fielder's choice left runners on the corners for Brett Barbati, whose infield single brought home Lincoln Sanborn from third.

MIT picked up all the runs it would need in the second, scoring three times. A pair of singles and a fielder's choice put runners on the corners for the Engineers, with a passed ball bringing in freshman Garrett Greenwood (Edmond, Okla.) home from third. Two walks loaded the bases with two outs and Cornwell cashed in, putting a ball through the right side to score a pair.

Michaud did not need any more run support than that, as he scattered six hits over his five innings of work, allowing just the one run while striking out four against one walk to pick up the win. The Engineers put the game away with two more runs in the third. Junior Kendall Helbert (St. Louis, Mo.) and freshman Max Lancaster (Attleboro, Mass.) started things off with a double and a single for the Engineers. Greenwood brought home one run with a ground out before junior Chad Uyehara (Mililani, Hawaii) made it 6-1 with an run-scoring infield single.

Senior K.J. Parent (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished up on the mound for MIT, allowing just one hit and striking out three over four innings to keep the Monks off the board. The Engineers wrapped things up with a Cornwell solo home run in the seventh and another RBI single from Uyehara in the eighth.

Alex Valenti started and took the loss for St. Joseph's, allowing six runs on eight hits over 2.2 innings. Barbati and Taylor Reuillard both and two hits to lead the Monks. Cornwell and Uyehara finished with three hits each for MIT, with Helbert and Lancaster both adding a pair of hits

MIT will now wait and see where they will be placed in the NCAA Regional Tournament that begins next week. The selections are scheduled to be released at midnight on Sunday.
