Third-Quarter Burst Helps MIT Defeat Wheaton, 14-5, on Senior Day

Box Score

THE BASICS:

- Score: MIT 14, Wheaton College 5

- Records: MIT (10-4, 5-1 NEWMAC); Wheaton (5-9, 1-5 NEWMAC)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium)

- The Lead: MIT used a 7-1 run in the third quarter to break open the game as it went on to record a 14-5 victory over Wheaton College in Wednesday night's NEWMAC men's lacrosse game. Senior Harris Stolzenberg (Weston, Fla.) produced three goals and two assists for the Engineers while CJ Leighton notched three goals and four groundballs for the Lyons.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Junior Mitch Turley (Westfield, Ind.) put MIT on the board first after 1:10 expired and then classmate Jack Kelly (Milford, Del.) increased the cushion over a minute later. Leighton cut the deficit in half with 11:18 on the clock as Maxwell McLaughlin evened the score at two with 5:08 left in the frame.

- The Engineers inched ahead on a strike by Turley five minutes into the second quarter but Leighton quickly replied with equalizer. MIT countered by creating a 5-3 cushion heading into halftime as Stolzenberg found the back of the net and then set up senior Michael Traub (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) for a man-up goal.

- A solo effort by freshman Jack Strachan (Moresville, N.C.) just 28 seconds into the third quarter kicked off the hosts' game-changing run, which was capped by Strachan's man-up marker with 3:14 remaining.

- Strachan completed the hat trick two minutes into the final frame, making the score 13-4. Both squads traded extra-man goals down the stretch as Leighton and sophomore Jacob Stein (Vienna, Va.) wrapped up the scoring.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Junior Graham Davis (Crofton, Md.) totaled two goals, one assist, and five groundballs while classmate Christian Jamison (Huntington, N.Y.) generated five groundballs and two caused turnovers for MIT. Freshman Jameson Kief (Plantsville, Conn.) bolstered the defense with five groundballs as fellow freshman Dylan Marlborough (Cutchogue, N.Y.) registered a 10-of-18 performance on the faceoff "X" to go along with five groundballs.

- In net, sophomore Alexander Lynch (Roswell, Ga.) made 11 saves in 54 minutes of action as classmate Victor Fink (Haverford, Pa.) finished off the game for the Engineers.

- Wheaton's Matt Morgan chipped in a goal while Mike Doucette collected four groundballs. Goalie Joey Mitchell recorded 15 saves and five groundballs.
