Box Score

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 6 MIT 5, Springfield College 0

- Records: No. 6 MIT (15-1-2, 8-0-0 NEWMAC); Springfield (11-4-1, 6-2-0 NEWMAC)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium)

- The Lead: The MIT women's soccer team, ranked sixth in this week's United Soccer Coaches Division III National Poll and tenth in the D3Soccer.com National Poll, broke the single-season record for most shutouts as the Engineers powered past Springfield, 5-0, to clinch at least a share of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Regular Season title for the eighth consecutive season today in Cambridge.

MIT, which was also ranked second in the initial NCAA Division III New England Regional Rankings, honored its seven seniors including Lily Bailey (Danvers, Mass.), Emily Berzolla (Riverside, Conn.), Chessa Hoekstra (Portland, Maine), Claire O'Callaghan (Sherborn, Mass.), Montana Reilly (Los Angeles, Calif.), Sophia Struckman (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Allie Werner (Tyler, Texas) prior to today's contest.

SCORING SUMMARY:

- 34th minute (33:26) - Berzolla was awarded a free kick from the 20-yard line and played the ball to sophomore Emily Larson (Ankeny, Iowa), who in turn played a one touch pass to classmate Karenna Groff (Weston, Mass.) inside the box. Groff, who drove through the defense on the set piece, finished the shot for her 14th goal of the season.

- 49th minute (48:54) - Groff added her second goal of the game as she cut across the top of the box and rocketed the ball into the left corner of the net.

- 58th minute (57:58) - Reilly registered her seventh goal of the season as she took a long pass from first-year Savannah Lawrence (Tucker, Ga.) and buried the shot from 20-yards out.

- 64th minute (63:01) - Berzolla was awarded a penalty kick for her eighth goal of the year.

- 74th minute (73:30) - Larson notched her fifth goal of the year as she finished a short pass from first-year Reese Alley (Columbus, N.C.) from the right side of the box.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- MIT keeper Ava Gillikin (Flemington, N.J.) improved to 12-0-2 this season for the Engineers with five saves in net, while Bridget O'Connor (6-2-0) took the loss with nine saves for Springfield over 90 minutes.

- MIT outshot Springfield by a 31-9 margin and took seven of the game's nine corner kicks.

- The Engineers broke the program record for most shutouts in a single season and now have 15 in 18 total matches this year. This year's squad broke the mark set by the 2010 team which tallied 14 shutouts that season.

- With a pair of goals today, Groff has now tallied 36 points this season, which not only leads the NEWMAC, but is the most a student-athlete has totaled for the Engineers since Amy Ludlum had 41 back in 2006.

- MIT jumped to No. 6 in this week's United Soccer Coaches Division III National Poll and moved up to No. 10 in the D3Soccer.com National Rankings.

- The win pushed MIT's unbeaten streak in NEWMAC regular season matches to 37, which is now tied for the 13th longest in NCAA Division III Women's Soccer history with Ithaca and Kalamazoo. This streak dates back to September 17, 2016. It also moved MIT's unbeaten streak to 15 matches and its overall winning streak to nine.

- The Engineers also extended their unbeaten streak at home to 45 matches which sits as the tenth longest streak in NCAA Division III Women's Soccer history and is tied with Puget Sound, which accomplished the feat from 2011-17.

- In eight NEWMAC matches this fall, MIT has outscored its opponents by a 32-1 margin.

UP NEXT:

- MIT will play its final regular season home match of the year on Tuesday, October 29 as the Engineers will welcome WPI for a NEWMAC battle on Roberts Field at 4:00 pm.
