THE BASICS:

- The Lead: Nationally-ranked No. 2 Tufts University opened the game with eight unanswered goals en route to a 19-9 victory over MIT in a non-conference women's lacrosse game on Wednesday. The Engineers had a balanced scoring performance as six players produced two points.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Tufts jumped out to an 8-0 lead at the 17:50 mark of the first quarter. Sophomore Shannon Wing (Westford, Mass.) ended the shutout 47 seconds later with an unassisted strike. The Jumbos replied with a five-goal burst, however, first-year Trudy Painter (Vienna, Va.) connected on a pass from sophomore Ali Hoffman (Port Washington, N.Y.) to make the score 13-2 at halftime.

- MIT carried the momentum into the second stanza as it rattled off four goals during the first 12 minutes. First-year Lindsey Gambino (Garden City, N.Y.) converted a free-position shot while Painter redirected a feed from first-year Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio). Wing buried another solo effort, followed by a strike from Rabenold.

- Tufts responded with a 6-1 run, increasing its advantage to 19-7 with 8:56 left to play. The Engineers continued to attack, producing two goals during the final five minutes. Hoffman found first-year Emma Tauckus (Manhasset, N.Y.) and then for the second time in the game, sophomore Naomi Lutz (Northbrook, Ill.) scored on a pass from senior Rayna Higuchi (Solana Beach, Calif.).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Lutz posted two goals and two groundballs while Hoffman had two assists and two groundballs. Sophomore Christine Padalino (Potomac, Md.) notched two groundballs and two caused turnovers as first-year goalie Abigail Kolyer (Manhasset, N.Y.) collected 10 saves.

- Tufts ended the day with advantages in shots (36-14), shots on goal (29-12), groundballs (20-12), and draw controls (24-6).

- The Engineers were 13-of-24 in clear attempts and 1-of-3 in free-position shots.

- The Jumbos were 8-of-12 in clear attempts and converted all four of their free-position shots.
