The Lead: After suffering a tough defeat to St. Francis Brooklyn earlier in the day, the MIT men's water polo team rebounded with a thrilling one-goal victory over Iona to earn a split of Saturday's matches.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE vs. ST. FRANCIS BROOKLYN:

- St. Francis opened the game with three-straight goals, but MIT responded with two quick strikes from senior
Miller Geschke (Los Altos, Calif.) to make it a one-goal game.
Â
- The Terriers scored the next five goals to take a 8-2 lead before a score from first-year
Richard Yun (Irvine, Calif.) stopped their run.
Â
- SFB went on an extended scoring run through the third quarter where a Geschke score stopping the Terriers scoring.
Â
- The Engineers were able to outscore the Terriers 3-1 in the fourth, but it was not enough as St. Francis Brooklyn took the match, 25-7.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Geschke led the way with five goals for MIT while Yun added two.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO vs. IONA:
Â
- After allowing an Iona goal to open the match, MIT responded with goals from seniors
Kaden DiMarco (Eugene, Ore.), Kyle Sandell (Mountain View, Calif.) and Geschke to take a 3-1 lead. Â
Â
- A man-up goal from the Gales cut the Engineers lead to one, but MIT responded, and the teams went back-and-forth before MIT closed the opening frame on a 3-0 run to take an 8-4 lead.

- Iona opened the second with a 2-0 run to cut the MIT lead to 8-6 but the Engineers got a goal by senior
John Steele (Old Greenwich, Conn.) to go back up by three. After another Iona score, sophomore
Evan Kowal (South Pasadena, Calif.) scored with five seconds left to give MIT a 10-7 halftime lead.

- The teams were scoreless until 2:59 left when Iona scored to take a 10-8 lead but Sandell scored to make it a three-goal match.
Â
- 24 seconds later Iona scored again to make it 11-9 but once again MIT scored with five ticks remaining as Geschke's goal made it 12-9.
Â
- Iona made a strong comeback in the fourth, eventually tying the game at 12, but with overtime looming, Geschke wound up and scored with one second remaining to give MIT the thrilling victory.
