Men's Water Polo

No. 20 George Washington Holds off Water Polo 17-10

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT water polo team fell to No. 20 George Washington, 17-10 on Sunday afternoon at the Harvard Invitational. 
 
THE BASICS: 

  • Score: George Washington 17, MIT 10 
  • Records: MIT (5-15, 1-4 NWPC), George Washington (12-12, 5-2 MAWPC) 

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

  • GW opened the game on a 5-0 run before a goal from Derek Schaffer got MIT on the board.  
  • Adam Ivatorov scored a six-on-five goal at 7:23 in the second, but GW scored the next two goals in a low scoring second quarter to take a 7-2 lead into the break. 
  • The teams scored five goals in the first two minutes of the third. Jackson Kay scored both MIT goals as George Washington increased its lead to 10-4. Rick Lundh took a pass from Kunal Rajadhyax on a six-on-five and found the back of the net to make it 11-5 with 4:01 left.  
  • After GW scored on their six-on-five chance to make it 13-5, MIT got goals from Andras Beleznay and Ivatorov to cut the deficit to six heading into the final eight minutes of play.  
  • GW opened the fourth on a 4-0 run to seal the win. Ivatorov, Schaffer, and David Ranaudo scored for the Engineers in the frame to account for the 17-10 final. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Ivatorov led the team with three goals to account for his eighth hat trick of the season. He now has a team-high 50 goals this season. Schaffer and Kay also had multi-goal games for the Engineers. 
  • Rajadhyax led the team with three assists. 
  • Joshua Woren made a team-high three steals while also having four saves. Armaan Gill made five saves. 

UP NEXT: 

  • The Engineers will play their home opener on November 1 as they welcome Harvard for a 9:00 PM match at the Zesiger Center Pool followed by a 2:00 PM match against Brown.
