The Lead: In what was a thrilling CWPA DIII Eastern Championship Final, the No. 8 MIT water polo team lost a heartbreaker to Johns Hopkins, 11-10, in overtime on a penalty shot goal.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Â
- The Blue Jays jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first, but the Engineers scored the next three to take the lead heading into the second quarter. Seniors
Miller Geschke (Los Altos, Calif.),
John Steele (Old Greenwich, Conn.), and
Kyle Sandell (Mountain View, Calif.) scored for MIT in the quarter.
Â
- Hopkins tied the match early in the second, however, MIT yet again responded with scores from Geschke and senior
Kaden DiMarco (Eugene, Ore.) to go back up by two. Â
Â
- Three-straight JHU goals made it a 6-5 contest before a Sandell score at 7:18 in the third tied the game. The two teams would trade goals before back-to-back goals from Geschke and Sandell put the Engineers up by two at 10-8 in the fourth.
Â
- JHU made it a one-goal contest with a goal at 7:30 and another Blue Jay goal at the 2:05 mark tied the match once again.
Â
- Neither team was able to get the winning goal in the game's final 2:05 as they would need extra time to decide the champion.
Â
- The teams played two scoreless overtime periods before the Jays were able to convert on a penalty shot 25 seconds into the sudden death period to claim the D3 Eastern Title. Â
