The Lead: The MIT water polo season came to a close as the Engineers dropped a tightly contested match to Johns Hopkins, 11-10 in the third-place game of the USA Water Polo Division III National Championship.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two rivals traded goals early on with sophomore
Evan Kowal (South Pasadena, Calif.) kicking off the scoring at 4:29.
- Back-to-back goals by the Blue Jays gave them a 3-2 lead but with 56 seconds remaining in the first, senior
Miller Geschke (Los Altos, Calif.) tied the match.
- A 4-0 JHU run gave them a 7-3 lead at 1:46 in the second but Geschke stopped the run with a powerplay goal at 1:23 to cut the MIT deficit to three.
- After an
Emerson Sullivan goal gave the Jays an 8-4 lead, back-to-back goals from Kowal and Geschke made it an 8-6 Hopkins lead.
-
Jayden Kunwar gave JHU a three-goal lead at 5:11, but MIT scored the next three goals, coming from senior
John Steele (Old Greenwich, Conn.) and first-year
Alexander Freedline (Miami, Fla.) and capped by the game-tying goal from Geschke with 3:53 remaining in the fourth.
- Hopkins regained the lead at 2:07, but just moments later, senior
Kyle Sandell (Mountain View, Calif.) fired a backhanded shot into the back of the cage to tie the game.
- JHU took the lead with 1:23 remaining in the game. Geschke had an excellent opportunity to tie the game shortly after but his shot rang off the post.
- Hopkins looked to extend its lead, but the shot was turned away by
Colin Weaver (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and the Engineers went down for one last shot to tie the match but Gesckhe's shot was saved and the Jays secured the one-goal win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Geschke finished the game with five goals to finish the year with a team-leading 78 on the year. That ranks as the fourth-highest total in a single-season in team history. For his career, he has a total of 218 in his career to rank third-all time in team history.
- Sandell finished the season with 77 goals while Freedline's goal was his third for the season.
- Kowal's two goals gave him 19 for the season while Steele finishes the season with 36.
- Weaver made 15 saves in net, and also added a steal in the match.
