Sailing Opens Fall Season With Impressive Showings

The Engineers Grabbed Three First-Place Finishes

Harvard Invitational – 1st place, 87 points (A Division – 31 points, B Division – 56 points)
  • It was a beautiful day out on the Charles River as the MIT sailing team got in its first action of the fall season.
  • The Engineers finished with boats in first, fourth, ninth and fifteenth overall.
  • In the 'A' division, Maks Groom (Seattle, Wash.) and Lulu Russell (Marion, Mass.) steered the Engineers to a second-place finish with 31 points followed in sixth place by the boat steered by Jemma Schroder (Menlo Park, Calif.)  and Julius Heitkoetter (Austin, Texas) which scored 70 points, just two shy of a top-five finish. Julia Wyatt (Sudbury, Mass.) and Brianna Ryan (Kappa, Hawaii) led the Engineers 4 to an 11th place finish with 100 points.
  • In Division B, Garrett Blosen (San Jose, Calif.) and Zoe Fisher (River Forest, Ill.) helped sail the Engineers to a third-place finish with 56 points while Max Katz-Christy (Cambridge, Mass.)  and Sophie Yang (Wynnewood, Pa.) registered a fifth-place finish with 64 points. MIT also registered a 12th-place finish in the boat steered by Charles Lindsay (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Soleh Anderlini (Washington, D.C.)  while Raymond Huffman (Manhasset, N.Y.) and Sarah Aaronson (Ashland, Ore.) placed 15th.
 
Charles Invitational – 1st Place, 72 points (A Division - 34 points, B Division - 38 Points)
  • The MIT boat in the A Division, which was steered by Groom and Samantha Karlson (Groton, Conn.) earned a second-place finish with 34 points. The second MIT boat, which was guided by Julius Heitkoetter (Austin, Texas) and Aaronson placed 8th with 66 points.
  • In the B Division races, the Engineers boat of Lindsay and Anderlin placed third with 38 points while the second boat of Mercedes Escandon (Brick, N.J.) and Nicholas Abate (Kemah, Texas) placed fifth with 50 points.
 
Toni Deutsch '58 Regatta (Women Only) - 1st place, 148 points (A – 57 points, B – 91 points)
  • The regatta, named after Toni Deutsch '58 who was she was the first woman at MIT to be awarded a varsity letter in sailing and helped lead MIT to two National Championships.
  • In Division A, the Engineers grabbed a second-place finish with 57 points as Dana Haig (Beach Haven, N.J.), Grace Mao (Overland Park, Kan.) and Veronika Silkin (Johnston, Iowa) controlled the boat, finishing just two points shy of first.
  • The second MIT boat controlled by Kaila Pfrang (Suffolk, N.Y.) and Maile Jim (Honolulu, Hawaii) finished on sixth with 98 points.
  • The Engineers boat controlled by Brooke Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) Wendy Wu (Andover, Mass.), and Jemma Schroder (Menlo Park, Calif.) finished third in Division B with 91 points while Emily Scherer (Oshkosh, Wis.) , Julia Wyatt (Sudbury, Mass.), Escandon and Shayne Bersin (Port Washington, N.Y.) placed 15th with 148 points.
 
Harry Anderson Jr. Trophy – 13th place, 327 points (A Division – 198 points, B Division – 129 points)
  • MIT used a variety of sailors for the conditions in the A Division race where the team placed 17th with 198 points. John Ped (Portland, Ore.), Alex Abate (Kemah, Texas), Elissa Ito (Tokyo, Japan), and Jeremy McCulloch (San Diego, Calif.) all rotated through sailing the Engineer vessel.
  • The Engineers also used a variety of sailors in the B Division where the team placed eighth overall with a score of 129 points. Ito, McCulloch, Sam Bruce (Severna Park, Md.) and Suparnmaaya Prasad (Yorktown, Va.) all played key roles in steering the ship to a top-10 finish.
 
UP NEXT:
  • The Engineers will be back in the water next weekend with a number of regattas on the docket. MIT will send boats to the Regis Trophy, the Women's Singlehanded New England Championship, the New England Singles and the Tufts Invitational. The Engineers will also host the Hatch Brown Trophy.
