The Lead:Â The MIT men's tennis team opened the 2021 fall season at the ITA New England Regional Championships, hosted by Bowdoin College.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN SINGLES ACTION:
- Junior
Daniel Papacica (Carmel, Calif.) Â advanced to the round of 32 with a three-set win over
Zach Lieb of Wesleyan. After dropping the first set, Papacica won the next two (0-6, 7-5, 6-3), but fell to No. 9 seed
Sujit Chepuri of Amherst in straight sets in the round of 32.
- Junior
Richter Jordaan (Denver, Colo.) fell in his first-round match to No. 9 Peter Anker of Wesleyan, 6-3, 6-2 while junior
Derek Shen (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) was also defeated in his first match by
Harris Foulkes of Amherst.
A LOOK INSIDE THE DOUBLES BRACKET:
- Papacica and Shen took the court in doubles and fell to
David Vilys and
Joe Mairs of Middlebury in a tightly contested match that the Panthers won 8-7 (4)
- The Engineers played another close doubles match as first-years
Carl-Herman Grant (Oslo, Norway) and
Daniel Antov (Austin, Texas) dropped their second-round match, 8-7 (6) to
Zachary Hilty and
Neel Epstein of Middlebury.

- The team of first-years
Ryan Xiao (Cary, N.C.) and
Wayne Nelms (Baltimore, Md.) fell in their round of 64 match to
Pieter Breuker and
Geoffrey Golan of Bowdoin.
