The Lead:Â The MIT water polo team downed Penn St. Behrend in game one of the day before falling just short of upsetting the top team in Division III, Pomona-Pitzer, as Sagehens squeaked out a one-goal victory over the Engineers.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. PENN ST. BEHREND

- The Engineers scored the game's first eight goals. MIT got two goals from first-year
Luke Apostolides (Greenwich, Conn.) and senior
Miller Geschke (Los Altos, Calif.), junior
Evan Kowal (South Pasadena, Calif.), sophomores
Richard Yun (Irvine, Calif.) and
Jack King (Los Altos, Calif.) and first-year
Vik Neni (Laguna Beach, Calif.) all found the back of the net

- After a PSB goal at 7:16 in the third, MIT went on a 6-0 run to pull ahead 14-1. Kowal and first-year
Kush Khamesra (Portland, Ore.) scored twice in the run, while King and Apostolides each found the back of the net.

- Penn St. got another goal at 4:10 in the fourth, and Neni wrapped up the scoring with a goal at 2:52.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Kowal recorded his sixth hat trick of the season and grabbed two steals while Apostolides got his fourth hat trick and contributed an assist and a steal.

- Khamesra finished with two goals and a team-high four assists.

- Geschke recorded a team-leading four steals to go with his two goals and three assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. POMONA-PITZER
Â
- MIT took an early lead on goals from Kowal and Apostolides, but the Sagehens went on a 3-0 run to take the lead. After a yellow card on Pomona, Geschke found the back of the net at 1:24 to make it a one-score game, but a goal by Maxim Koretksy with 31 seconds left gave Pomona a 4-3 lead after one.

- Geschke tied the match up in the second with a five-meter goal at 3:07, but the Sagehens went right back in the lead with a goal at 1:53. A few moments later, Geschke converted on his second five-meter opportunity at 1:26 to even the score at five.

- Pomona built an 8-6 lead in the third before three-straight goals from MIT tied the match with Kowal's goal at 1:37 evening the score at eight.

- The Sagehens went back up 10-8, but MIT did not go away as a goal from first-year
Adam Ivatorov (Rockaway, N.Y.) evened the match at ten. The Sagehens were able to convert the deciding goal with 21 seconds remaining.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
-Geschke recorded his eighth hat trick this season and increased his team-leading goal total to 41. He added three assists and two steals to increase his season totals to 24 and 47.

- Kowal's two scores give him 27 on the season, and Apostolides' two scores give him 21.

- Weaver made 14 saves in goal and grabbed a team-high five steals.
