MIT Falls to DI Opponents Brown and No. 16 Harvard

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Zesiger Center Pool) / Cambridge, Mass. (Blodgett Pool)
 
- The Lead: The MIT water polo team dropped two contests to Division I opponents in Brown and Harvard on Saturday afternoon. First-year Adam Ivatorov (Rockaway, N.Y.) led the way with 11 goals on the day.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. BROWN
 
- The Bears opened the game on a 5-0 run before a goal from first-year Luke Apostolides (Greenwich, Conn.) got MIT on the board at 4:37 in the second. Brown responded with back-to-back goals to make it a 7-1 contest however, the Engineers got back-to-back scores from senior Miller Geschke (Los Altos, Calif.), and Ivatorov to make it a four-goal match. Brown scored with 29 seconds left to take a five-goal lead into the break.
 
- Brown increased its lead to 10-3 before scores from Ivatorov, and junior Evan Kowal (South Pasadena, Calif.) got the Engineers back to within five. Brown got a goal back at 4:16, and Geschke made it an 11-6 game with his second of the day at 3:23. Ivatorov scored his third of the day at 2:03 to cut the Brown lead to 12-7.
 
- Ivatorov got the first goal of the fourth to pull MIT to within five at 13-8. Brown then went on a 3-0 run to pull ahead 16-8. Geschke and Ivatorov scored back-to-back goals to make it a six-goal game, and Ivatorov rounded out the scoring for MIT with his fifth of the day at 1:02.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- The six goals for Ivatorov are a career-high, and he also added three steals.  
 
- Geschke finished the match with three goals and five steals.
 
- Sophomore Richard Yun (Irvine, Calif.) led the team with five assists, and first-year Kush Khamesra (Portland, Ore.), and sophomore Jack King (Los Altos, Calif.) recorded two each.
 
- Junior Colin Weaver (Huntington Beach, Calif.) made three stops in goal, and senior Conrad Oakes (Pasadena, Calif.) made five.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. HARVARD
 
- Harvard took a 6-3 lead after one with MIT getting a goal from King and two from Ivatorov.
 
- The Crimson took control in the second quarter as they outscored the Engineers 9-1. The lone Engineer goal came from Kowal at 1:23.
 
- MIT outscored Harvard 3-2 in the third quarter with goals from Kowal, Ivatorov, and first-year Vik Neni (Laguna Beach, Calif.) to make it a 17-7 game heading into the fourth.
 
- The Engineers finished the game outscoring the Crimson 3-1 in the final stanza as Ivatorov added two more goals and Geschke recorded his first of the match.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
 
- Ivatorov now has 48 goals on the year. He also added one steal and earned two ejections.
 
- Geschke led the team with five assists and three steals. He has 55 goals, 40 assists, and 66 steals this season.
 
- Kowal finished with two goals and a steal. He now has 42 this year.
 
- Weaver made four saves and grabbed three steals and Oakes made five saves in goal for the Engineers.  

UP NEXT:

- MIT will host Iona and St. Francis College Brooklyn on Saturday, November 5th. The Engineers will play the Gales at 11:30 a.m. followed by a 4:30 p.m. contest against the Terriers. MIT will honor its senior class prior to the 11:30 a.m. match.
