The Lead: Nationally-ranked No. 18 MIT saw its season come to an end in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship following a 25-23, 25-19, 25-15 loss to No. 6 Trinity University on Wednesday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-
Set 1: Holding a 7-6 lead, a kill by senior
Alyssa Unell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) sparked a 7-2 run which increased the Engineers' advantage to 14-8. Trinity slowly generated a an 11-4 run to capture the lead, however, a kill by sophomore
Lauren Keller (Albuquerque, N.M.) along with a pair of hitting errors gave MIT a 21-19 edge. An exchange of points followed until a hitting error and a kill put the Tigers in front, 23-22. A kill by Keller evened the score but Trinity capitalized on a pair of MIT miscues to capture the 25-23 victory.
-
Set 2: The Tigers inched out to a 7-4 lead but the Engineers batted back, tying the set on three occasions, the last at 11 on a kill by Keller. Trinity quickly replied with back-to-back kills, but a block by sophomore
Ella Gragg (Morganton, N.C.) and junior
Consecrata Rozario (Cary, N.C.) cut MIT's deficit in half. The Tigers used a kill and a hitting error to create some breathing room before both squads started trading points, moving the score to 16-14. Trinity responded with a trio of kills and a block as it pulled away for a 25-19 win.
-
Set 3: The Engineers jumped out to a 5-1 lead following a kill by Keller. After their own timeout, the Tigers went on an 11-2 run to go ahead for good. MIT capitalized on a pair of hitting errors, a kill by senior
Lilly Edwards (Kansas City, Mo.), and an ace by sophomore
Ottavia Personeni (Bethesda, Md.) to come within 12-11. Two kills and a hitting error increased Trinity's cushion but a kill from Unell along with a hitting error brought the Engineers within 15-13. This was as close as it would get as a kill sparked a 10-2 match-ending run by the Tigers.
