Water Polo Drops 17-7 Decision to Cal Lutheran in USA Water Polo Semifinals

MIT will play in the third-place game

THE BASICS:

- The Lead: After the first quarter ended tied at two, Cal Lutheran used a 12-2 run to defeat the MIT Water Polo team 17-7 in the semifinals of the USA Water Polo Division III Championships on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
- The Kingsmen jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 6:07 before a goal from first-year Adam Ivatorov (Rockaway, N.Y) at 5:15 tied the match. Adam Dow scored at 3:28 to put the hosts back in the lead. First-year Luke Apostolides (Greenwich, Conn.) connected on a goal with 2:59 left to even the match at two.
 
- Cal Lutheran went on a 6-0 run to go up 8-2 before junior Evan Kowal (South Pasadena, Calif.) ended the run. The Kingsman went on another 6-0 run to pull ahead 14-3. A goal from senior Miller Geschke (Los Altos, Calif.) ended the run and made it a 14-4 contest.
 
- MIT got goals from Ivatorov, Apostolides, and Geschke in the fourth as Cal Lutheran held for the 17-7 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Ivatorov recorded his 17th multi-goal game this year and ranks second on the team with 62 goals.
 
- Apostolides finished with two goals, four ejections earned, one assist, and one steal. He now has 30 goals on the year to go along with 45 ejections earned, 39 steals, and 14 assists.
 
- Geschke finished with two goals, one assist, and three steals. On the year he leads the team in goals (69), steals (86), and assists (48). For his career, he is second in goals with 287.

- Kowal now has 59 goals this season.

- The Engineers will play in the third-place game tomorrow at 10:30 am local time against the loser of the Johns Hopkins vs. Redlands game.
